Jim Baber, Jr. spent 18 years serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, something he is immensely proud of. He had intended to serve until retirement, but he suffered from increasing pain due to a back injury he received while on active duty. The pain worsened over the years and forced him to seek surgical relief. In 1992, he underwent open back surgery in which young military doctors fused some of his lower lumbar together. With limited mobility and often excruciating pain, he continued to serve in the Marine Corps but was medically discharged as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1994. Due to the medical discharge at 18 years of service (and not the full 20), Jim did not receive his retirement. Even worse, the back surgery was a failure because the once fused bones broke apart.
As a civilian, this zealous man, who loves to work and enjoy the great outdoors, tried to hike and exercise, but couldn’t do near what he used to do, which was frustrating and distressing. He continued to serve his country working as a civilian for the U.S. Army for 14 years, implementing educational programs to help the military understand and operate UAVs. He loved this job very much. It gave him a strong sense of pride and purpose. After increasing problems with his back and the need for more pain medication, he could no longer pursue any work.
Over the years, Jim has sought treatment of various kinds, hearing all kinds of promises, but ultimately nothing has delivered true relief. His back pain continues to intensify each year, to the point that now he must be in a wheelchair or walk a short distance with a cane. Most days, he can’t even get out of bed.
There is a procedure that can help Jim. But it’s through the Laser Spine Institute and not the VA. The VA can’t do this procedure because they don’t have the technology for it and have turned him away. The VA also will not pay for Jim to get this surgery because it’s not at one of their facilities or through their doctors. Medical insurance will not cover it either.
This is where you come in. We – Jim’s family – are pitching in to help him get the surgery. The approximate cost is around $24,158. We don’t have enough resources to pay for everything ourselves so we are asking friends, loved ones and others who feel compassion for Jim or what he is going through to help give this sweet man his quality of life back. If you cannot afford to offer anything in terms of financial support, we beg you for your prayers, love and encouragement.
