We would like to help the Jacobsen family.
Kameron Jacobsen was a beautiful 14-year old boy from a loving, highly supportive family. Kameron had been torturously victimized by bullying in school, on the ball field, and on Facebook, primarily for the crime of being small. By January 18, 2011, the pain of this bullying had become so unbearable that Kameron took his own life to escape it.
The family was distraught over the loss of their dearly loved Kameron as any family would be. Although in tremendous pain, the Jacobsens devoted their energy to help make a difference and try to help other families avoid suffering the same fate as they did in losing their beloved child. They started Kindness Above Malice [KAM], a foundation to stop bullying, and became active advocates for anti-bullying legislation. Kameron's parents, Kevin and Wanda, appeared on talk shows, gave speeches to groups and even spoke in Washington to raise awareness and give support to this agenda.
In spite of these efforts the grief continued and as the first anniversary of Kameron's death grew near, the pain grew worse. On January 7, 2012, less than one year after his son's death, Kameron's father Kevin followed in his footsteps and took his own life.
This beautiful family of 5 was now 3 and in one short year their world was shattered twice. Wanda and her two remaining children, Kevin and Kiersten, had lost two members of their family that had been a normal happy family not so long before. Their life has been turned upside down and their pain is unimaginable.
The emotional recovery for this family will take a very long time. In the meantime, the financial obligations of life continue and add to their struggles and make the day-to-day challenges even more overwhelming. This follows on the year after Kameron's death in which they were unable to go back to work. I know many of us feel helpless in times like this and wish we could do something to help but don't know what to do. One way we can make a difference is to help the Jacobsens with their immediate financial concerns as much as possible and allow them to deal with their grief.
