Rowan Kessel's Medical Fund

Dear friends and family of the Soderlinds,

Rowan Kessel Soderlind was born on June 24, 2014 weighing 8 lbs., 2oz and was welcomed home to his very excited sister, Poppy, on 6/27/14.

At Rowan’s routine well child check when he was 11 days old, it was discovered he had hydrocephalus (swelling in the brain) and he was transported by his parents from Duluth to Children’s Hospital in St. Paul.  While there, Rowan underwent surgery to have a shunt placed in his head to assist with draining excess fluid from his brain down to be absorbed by his abdomen.

Rowan was discharged home 4 days later only to go through other complications including an emergency drive to Children’s again due to concerns of swelling, diagnosed with an umbilical hernia and double inguinal hernias (possibly caused by intense crying) and then back to Children’s from 7/20 – 7/28/14 to have his shunt replaced due to malfunction.

As of 8/1/14, Rowan again was readmitted to Children’s for the 4th time in his 6 weeks of life as MRI scans revealed a large blood clot in his brain.  He was treated with a blood thinner called Heparin by IV and will now require close monitoring along with twice daily injections of Lovenox at home for the next 6 months.  They are working with hematology to diagnose a possible blood clotting disorder.  Though having this knowledge does provide some relief to Brynn and Adam, it is still a very scary reality.

As you all know, Brynn is a stay at home mother while Adam is employed full time.  Due to the unforeseen circumstances with Rowan’s medical situation, Adam has not been able to work and has exhausted all of his short term disability as well as his PTO.  It is unknown at this time when he can return to work given all of Rowan’s setbacks.  We are extremely hopeful this is Rowan’s LAST stay at Children’s for a while (though the staff, especially the nurses, may beg to differ) and he can return home to enjoy the excitement of his big sister and his parents can finally breathe a small sigh of relief.

As a friend or family member, I’m sure you understand the feeling of being “helpless”.  Brynn and Adam are the two most caring, selfless, generous and kindest human beings we all know on this Earth so it is hard to want to be able to help them but not actually being able to do so.  Just so you all know, you have!  Brynn and Adam were telling me the other day how each and every message they have received via text, phone, or social media has really helped provide them with hope and strength to get through this very difficult and stressful time.  Thank you so much for those who have reached out to them!

There is another opportunity to help if you are able.  GoFundMe gives 100% of your monetary donations to Brynn and Adam to help with Rowan’s medical expenses (minus a small fee).  I have used it to donate in the past and know it is a legitimate site.  But please do not feel obligated.  Your love and support is all they ask for and need.

Thank you so much for any assistance you are able to provide.

Much love,

Melinda Heaser.
