Helping Felicia

Felecias Journey in Her Words :

“My life changed dramatically at 40 yrs of age. They say life starts at 40 and for me, I was pregnant for the first time and thrilled to become a mum. A dream come true and one that I had wished for a long time. I was enjoying my pregnancy bubble and was walking 6kms at least 5 days per week. I had never felt better and along came Callahan on the 18th of January 2013. Perfection in my eyes and all was wonderful or so I thought.
I had a lump checked while I was pregnant, but the drs assured me it was nothing. While I was in hospital after giving birth, a nurse commented on getting my lump checked again, as she felt it didnt look right.
Six weeks after Callahan was born, I was diagnosed with grade 3, aggressive breast cancer. A blur of scans, tests, pet scans, biopsies and then gruelling chemo endured, followed by radiation. I had a lumpectomy to remove the tumour and the treatment took nearly a year out of my life.
During this time I found out I had a faulty mismatch repair gene, called Lynch syndrome. This puts me at high risk of many cancers, but first in our family to endure breast. I was informed to have a radical hysterectomy, as I was at a high risk of developing ovarian cancer. Devastated and sad, I went ahead with the surgery and life has never been the same.
Fast forward 12 months later, during a regular check up, another small cancer was found again in the same breast. Here we go again, but this time I lost both breasts and my hair again for the second time. I didnt regret the surgery, but mourned the changes to my body and life. Chemo for a second time was so dificult and gruelling at times. I didnt think I could do it, but of course I did.
During this time, I also became a single mum to my son Callahan. That in itself was challenging and scary. I thought life was finally settling down, until another diagnosis three years later at the end of 2017. This time it was extensive and could not be completely removed during surgery. I have currently endured another 16 rounds of chemo and embarking on 28 rounds of radiation. If this doesnt work, then immunotherapy is my next option. Its not covered by the pbs here in Australia and currently trials are limited.
I am very grateful to my wonderful friends and family for their continued love and support. I dont know what lies ahead for my future, but I do know that I have to continue to fight for my son, as he needs me as much as I need him.
Love and blessings to you all,
Felicia and Cal”
