Nursing Volunteer Internship - Tanzania

My name is Curtis Monier, and I am a junior nursing student at Husson University in Bangor, Maine.

In May, I will be traveling to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for six weeks as a member of the Work the World study abroad internship program. I will be volunteering as a nursing student for 3 weeks in the Pediatrics Unit and orphanage and 3 weeks in the Emergency Department at a local hospital. Tanzania's risk for infectious disease is extremely high in children & adults. Africa is faced with many diseases including HIV, malaria, typhoid fever, yellow fever, hepatitis and rabies. Due to the lack of medical staff, vaccinations, supplies and budget, the approximate life expectancy is 58 years old compared to 80 years old in the United States.

I am certain this unique opportunity will change my life forever. I will have experiences I never imagined and an opportunity to learn more about a cultural diversity, global health, and nursing science. I majored in Nursing because I truly want to help people in any way that I can. Now that I am given this opportunity, I am determined touch the lives of children and adults in a country struck by poverty and disease. Not only will I gain these experiences for myself, but I look forward to sharing what I learn with my professors and my fellow nursing peers at Husson University.

This program is completely volunteer, however it is very costly with a total cost of $6,000. The Work the World Organization invests the money back into the local hospitals & clinics that students like myself will be working. These funds go to pay for staffing, equipment and supplies. I appreciate any contribution given to help support my volunteer efforts in Tanzania.
