Please assist my brother and I with the future care of our father.
Most of you who know my brother and I know that we have been taking care of my father on and off for the last 10 years. The problem has always been that it was never able to be a joint effort. With my brother in school in the first few years and me being in the Marines for the last few we have never really been able to focus our efforts on his rehabilitation as much as we would like.
Just last year in August I moved my brother and father out here to California to be able to work together and finally get my dad to a physically and mentally healthy and happy state of mind. For those of you who know my father he has always been a kind, loyal, God loving man who has given his heart and his shirt off his back to almost anyone in need. Now we are asking for a little in return.
Our challenge lately with the move has been the ability to set up financially enough to get him the care and rehabilition he needs to get the streanth to enjoy his time back with his family out here in California.
We are applying for MediCal and IHSS as most of you have recommended and are still in the waitin process. We did this when we first moved here but the application was "lost". My brother had to live here a year to become a resident and is know in the process of applying for the IHSS.
My brother has taken full responsibilty of his day today care and is unable to get a job on the side due to the 24 hour care required to keep my dad alive. We have nurses that come to bath and check vitals but we are soon running out of funds to do this on our own.
Also proper transportation has been a real challenge since he is wheel chair bound and suffers from severe vertigo. We have been trying to save for a handicap accessible van but with the rest of our medical expenses it will be some time before we are able to do so. We have had to pick and choose the most important appointments due to the difficulty of loading and unloading and the exhaustion it puts on him physically of being shoved in and out of a car. In the meantime he has experienced several small strokes that have just recently been found and need to be treated.
For those of you who know my family it is very rare for us to ask anything from anybody. We have always been very independent and willing to help out in any situation. If you are able we ask for anything you can spare to help us get through this periodic trial.
If you are able to donate your money will go towards the physical therapy that isn't covered by insurance and most of all a handicap accesible vehicle that will allow my brother to transport my father easier back and forth from the appointments and hire nurses in order to give my brother some freedom to enjoy as well as time to get a job and set his life up.
