Mountain Climbing for Breast Cancer

Spende geschützt

We are climbing Pico de Orizaba , the tallest mountain in Mexico, in order to support breast cancer research, increase cancer awareness, and ultimately contribute to the eradication of a disease that impacts families everywhere.
Who we are:

Alex Roth and Jackson Blum are both experienced mountaineers, Wilderness-certified EMTs, brothers of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, and full-time students at Yale University. Alex (left) studies Cognitive Science with a concentration in Perception and Psychophysics, is president of Yale Outdoors - the university's outing club - and is an aspiring Peace Corps volunteer and wilderness medicine doctor. Jackson (right) studies Environmental Science, supervises urban forestry projects in New Haven, CT, and is an aspiring high school science teacher.

Our Mission:

Our journey will begin on December 26, 2014, when we will fly from Boston to Mexico City together. From there, we will bus to Puebla, where we will start off by climbing the mountains La Malinche  (14,640 feet) and Iztaccihuatl (17,159 feet), in order to acclimatize for the low amounts of oxygen we will face on Orizaba. Our ascent of Orizaba will begin on New Year's Day 2015, and we will reach the summit (18,490 feet) on January 4.

This is a personal cause for us. Both our mothers are breast cancer survivors.

Where Your Money Will Go:

Our expedition budget is $3.2k. This includes all expenses associated with the climb, including travel to Veracruz-Puebla, Mexico, our hostel stays, food, and permits.

All the funds that we raise beyond $3.2k will be donated to Sharsheret , Dartmouth Hitchcock's Norris Cotton Cancer Center, and Indiana University Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, with one third of the total donation allocated to each. Jackson's mother Susan was treated at Dartmouth, and Alex's mother Vanessa was treated at Indiana University. We hope to raise at least $3.2k for donation - hence our $6.4k fundraising goal.

Thank you:

To those who have helped and continue to help nurture our love for the outdoors, the medical staff at Dartmouth and Indiana University who shepherded our families through medical crises, and to you, for reading this far and considering contributing financially to sending us to the rooftop of Mexico, as well as keeping the fire of breast cancer medical research alive.

Our sponsors:

This project is sponsored by Hillflint , whose sweaters will be keeping us warm for the summit approach. Thank you, Hillflint, for believing in us and helping send us to the clouds.

Many thanks to the kind folks at Farm-Way, Inc / Vermont Gear, of Bradford, VT. They've outfitted us with the severe-weather gear that will ensure we stay dry and agile on the mountainside. They're in Jackson's neck of the woods; since he was a kid, he's admired their consistent supplying of a complete suite of equipment "for man and beast."

This project is also sponsored by the #IvyLeagueProject art series and Systems Plus Computers.

Onward, to the summit. For our moms, for yours, and for moms around the world.
