Climbing Kilimanjaro for Education at the margins

Donation protected
Hi, I am Luigi and I am going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with my friend Mark on October 10th 2021. I was born in Kenya, and since I was a kid I always was fascinated by ‘The White Mountain’. At 5,895m Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
Together with Mark, we decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL), in order to support their teacher education program in the refugee camp of Kakuma (Kenya). JWL provides equitable high quality tertiary learning to people and communities at the margins of societies - be it through poverty, location, lack of opportunity, conflict or forced displacement – so all can contribute their knowledge and voices to the global community of learners and together foster hope to create a more peaceful and humane world.

Kakuma refugee camp is the largest refugee camp in the world and is a home to 160,000 refugees (January 2021). The camp is located in Turkana County, one of the poorest counties in Kenya. The refugees in the camp live in severe poverty and vulnerability for both hosts and refugees, making the case for targeted interventions to buffer livelihoods, improve human capital, and break the cycle of poverty across these communities. Education is a key enabler to help break trough poverty.

In that, Jesuit Worldwide Learning has established a track record in the last ten years of delivering on-site classroom-based teacher training programs in refugee settings and for the last two years JWL has launched a newly formulated Learning Facilitator course delivered in a blended-learning modality. This fundraising will support the work accomplished by JWL with its many volunteers, local and virtual partnerships, in achieving its mission in Kakuma. The funding will be dedicated to enable the creation of environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction with active engagement in learning.
It costs US$1,200/€1,000 to fund a student in one of JWL's 6-month Professional Certificate Courses and for US$600/€525 JWL can teach a student English for a year.

Thank you for your donation! This will give us the right motivation to reach the summit with your support for education at the margins!
Mark & Luigi
