You made it possible and Your-Forest 2.0 is coming!

Exactly one year ago, for my Birthday I wanted to give back to the planet and plant a food forest.
That’s why I started the Your-Forest crowdfunding campaign. Your support gave me the backing to start the project.
We started with a piece of land that was covered in thick blackberries and bamboo.

After clearing the land we build swales and other earthworks to harvest rainwater passively.

Once the earth was in place, we started planting. We planted thousands of cover crops by seed to quickly cover the naked ground, provide nutrients and build soil.

Many young trees were planted to give them a head start against the annual cover crops on the ground. We also started hundreds of trees from seed to let them grow naturally and find their place in the ecosystem.

Over the coming months, the naked soil turned into the lush green beginning of a forest. Within a few years, the annual pioneer plants will slowly die back and trees will emerge to form a dense canopy. Plants will find their role in the ecosystem and a stable food forest will emerge.

And the best part is that this is just the beginning. In the campaign video, I mentioned that I hope for this forest to be the first of many.

That hope is turning into reality. On Tenerife, I had the great opportunity to plan, prepare and plant a food forest on a fantastic farm in a perfect location. I worked there for half a year on several projects to pay for the forest.

During the Corona lockdown, an incredible opportunity came up.
I was invited to join a very special project. With a group of good friends, we are bringing an abandoned village back to life.

Since I paid for the forest on Tenerife with my work, and I haven't touched the campaign money yet, the money will be used to plant a second forest in Portugal.

This means you get another tree in Portugal and the environment gets two forests for the cost of one.

The owners of the farm in Tenerife will look after the planted trees and make sure they turn into a lush forest while I can focus on the new forest in Portugal.

Finally, the project in Portugal enables us to plant trees on our own land and to accompany them for years to come, until they reach their full height.

We are bringing an abandoned village back to life and growing all gardens and forests from scratch. It is going to be an incredible journey for the coming years and I want to invite you to come on the journey to see everything grow.

Thank you soooo much for your early support of the project.

You made it all possible! Thank you <3

Imagine you are standing in a lush green forest that produces food all year long.

This forest is called a food forest and it produces more food, stores more CO2 and requires less work to maintain every year.

Food forests are an incredible Climate Solution, which can help to reduce hunger, increase self-resilience and regenerate ecosystems all over the world.

Your contribution will enable the creation of food forests and turn polluting CO2 from the atmosphere into useful trees and food on the ground.

This campaign is about much more than simply planting trees.

Below you can read the full story and learn how you can join The Food Forest Family.

Through photosynthesis trees turn the polluting CO2 from the atmosphere into life on and in the ground.

With the help of fungi and bacteria it gets stored deep into the soil.

When a tree drops its leaves or when it dies, the stored carbon becomes the food for billions of microorganism and fungi that store it in their bodies. They breathe out some of the carbon but most of it stays in the ground.

Through this process, trees store carbon in the ground even after they die.

Forests are one of our greatest allies in our quest to solve the climate crisis. They have many more benefits for us and our climate.

·       Offer Shade & Protection
·       Clean the Air
·       Provide Natural Air Conditioning
·       Create Rain
·       Prevent Droughts & Flood
·       Prevent Erosion
·       Provide homes for millions of animals

Food for the world, one forest at a time

The challenges of conventional agriculture

In conventional agriculture, farmers have to start planting from zero each year. The crops go from seed to harvest in one growing season and take nutrients out of the ground as they grow.
Often chemical fertilisers are needed to grow plants and chemical pesticides are needed to keep pests away.

What makes food forests different?

Food forest are a very different way to produce food. They are like normal forests but consist of many different edible plant species.

Food Forests:

Grow food in space and time
Food is grown in many different layers and at different times of the year.

Fertilise themselves and build soil
As leaves and other plant matter drop to the ground, microorganisms and fungi turn them into fertile soil.

Produce more food and require less work each year
The forest keeps growing and in an established food forest most of the work needed is harvesting the various sources of food.

Support those who need it most

Especially in the driest and poorest regions of the planet food forests provide an incredible opportunity to get a reliable source of food.

Increase Resilience
They can withstand many extreme weather conditions and produce food all year long and not just at the few times a year when annual crops are harvested.

Who is the guy with the hat, and why does he care so much?

My name is Nick Steiner and I love trees!

The climate crisis is here and we need to solve it. That's why I dedicated my life to learning more about the environment, instead of pursuing a corporate career.

My main motivation is to learn how we can live not just sustainably but regeneratively and restore those places and ecosystems  around the world that have already been destroyed.

Luckily, planting trees and offsetting carbon is becoming more popular, but I believe that the biggest value for our planet is not just planting trees, but spreading knowledge and inspiring communal action.

I don’t just want to ask for your money and go offline to plant trees but invite you to join the Food Forest Family.

Together we will go on a shared learning journey about everything tree-love related and how to regenerate the planet.

In addition you will get many more tips, tricks and tutorials how you can live a more sustainable life and grow plants no matter where you live.

I have already started to plant trees on a small scale on the beautiful island of Tenerife, but it is just the very beginning and together we can have a much bigger positive impact!

That’s why I need your help!

With your contribution, I will be able to continue planting trees and to give them the love and care they deserve.

These are the next steps:

·       Set up a full tree nursery
·       Get many different seeds of different species
·       Buy small trees from local nurseries to save time
·       Buy and set up watering systems for the forest
·       Prepare the soil for planting

However, the biggest limiting factor at the moment is space.

The next important milestone:

·       Buy a bigger piece of land

The campaign goal was set to ensure that I can at least continue planting on the small scale.

With your help I will be able to buy a dedicated piece of land that can hold and protect the forest for generations to come.

As a supporter of this campaign you will join the Food Forest Family and you will play an active role towards a practical Climate Solution.

Together we will grow a food forest and turn carbon from a pollutant in the sky into life and food on and in the ground.

Every contribution helps in the creation of this project and you can decide how you want to join the Food Forest Family

How do you want to join the Food Forest Family?

Three Ways how you can support this project

1.    Contribute to the campaign and join the Food Forest Family

2.    Share the campaign and video with the world

3.    Talk to your friends and family about the magic of food forests

Thank you so much for taking the time and supporting this campaign.

I can’t wait to welcome you to the Food Forest Family and show everyone how food forests can be a real Climate Solution all over the world!

Together we will grow not just any forest, but your forest!

The environment and especially forests are incredibly fascinating and there is so much to learn about them.

This campaign page can only scratch the surface of how these systems work and the potential they have as practical Climate Solutions.

I'm so excited to begin the journey with you and share many more details about the processes and solutions that we can use to regenerate the planet.

If you have any questions or can't wait to get more details, please let me know in the comment section.

FAQ:

How much carbon will be stored?

Carbon sequestration
is a complex process, which depends on a very large number of factors. Many organisations calculate with roughly 1 ton of stored carbon per tree, but there is no precise amount of carbon, which can be attributed to one single tree.

Climate, location, species, age, soil, surrounding and the forest composition, among others all play a role in this process.

I spent countless hours on research about precise numbers of carbon storage and came to the conclusion that I don't want to offer you unproven numbers.

That is why I am focusing my efforts on the strategies that offer most benefits to us: Storing carbon in trees as well as the soil, while regenerating the landscape and producing food.
