Check out my website for more on the project and to follow the story! https://www.climatekayakandconversation.org/ Setting out in a Hobie Adventure Island kayak in Miami, Florida, I plan to travel up the Intracoastal Waterway to Norfolk, Virginia. Along this voyage, I will stop in ports, harbors, and towns to interview local residents, visitors, activists, and scientists. The mission of this project is to tell the stories of those impacted by climate change in coastal communities and engage them in their local environment through citizen science. The Southeast Atlantic coast has been identified as one of the most vulnerable regions to high tide flooding in all of the lower 48 states. Compounding this issue is the fact that 39% of the population of the United States, which generates 58% of the nation’s GDP, live in a county directly on the shoreline. Putting those two issues together spells a grim fate for many of the communities located along coastal waterways and bodies of water. Citizen science projects have been shown to increase engagement from local communities in conservation-related activities. Among the growing field of citizen science research, coastal and marine projects make up less than a fifth of these projects. With over 20,000 miles of coastal and tidal shoreline along the Atlantic coast from Florida to North Carolina, there is a significant need for additional, localized data. Climate, Kayak, and Conversation will measure its success by the completion of a documentary-style production after the conclusion of the voyage. This documentary will include the interviews and stories recorded, stills of the local ecosystem, as well as portraits of the interviewees.
