<div>The <strong>CLEAR Path Initiative</strong> pilot program was created to address a gap that many justice-impacted and formerly incarcerated college students face but few people realize exists. Colleges do an incredible job helping students succeed academically. However, for many students with past criminal records, graduation is only the beginning of another challenge. Even after earning a degree, old history can continue to limit employment, professional licensing, internships, housing, and other opportunities.

<div>CLEAR was created to support students who are <strong>actively</strong> enrolled in college and committed to building a better future through education. Its mission is to help eligible students obtain their California Department of Justice (DOJ) history records and, when appropriate, receive financial assistance for legal representation to pursue record reduction, dismissal, sealing, or expungement.

<div>College programs <strong>specifically</strong> focused on legal record relief are extremely limited. Few organizations provide record relief assistance to justice-impacted college students while they are enrolled, and those that do often have limited capacity. As a result, many students are left to navigate a confusing and expensive legal process on their own.

<div>This mission is personal to me. I am currently a college student and a formerly incarcerated individual. I experienced firsthand how confusing and expensive it was to obtain my California Department of Justice (DOJ) history record, understand my legal options, and find legal assistance. After obtaining record relief, I was able to pursue opportunities that ultimately led to employment with a local government agency. That experience reinforced my belief that removing eligible legal barriers allows education and hard work to open doors. It also inspired me to create CLEAR so other students have access to support that did not exist when I needed it.

<div>The pilot will initially serve students enrolled at <strong>San Diego Mesa College, San Diego City College, and San Diego Miramar College</strong>. Beginning with these three colleges allows CLEAR to build a strong foundation, measure outcomes, refine the program, and demonstrate its impact. The pilot is designed to produce measurable outcomes that support future partnerships, grant funding, and expansion. My hope is that its success will encourage colleges, community partners, and funders to invest in programs like CLEAR.

<div>Based on my own experience, I believe helping justice-impacted college students obtain meaningful careers is also an investment in <strong>public safety</strong>. When people have the opportunity to build stable careers, support themselves and their families, and contribute to their communities, <strong>everyone benefits</strong>.

<div>Transparency is one of CLEAR's core values. Every dollar received and every project-related expenditure will be publicly documented on the CLEAR website through a financial ledger that explains how funds are used while protecting participant privacy. All funds will be used in accordance with CLEAR's published Fund Usage and Transparency Policy. My goal is for every donor to know exactly how their contribution is helping students remove barriers to employment and build brighter futures.
