<div>In many communities across Ghana, getting eye care can be out of reach. For families living on lower incomes, the cost of transportation, clinic visits, tests, glasses, and treatment can be a major barrier. For instance, the WHO estimated that 2 out of 3 people in low-income countries who need eyeglasses don’t have access to them. As a result, many people only seek help once vision problems have become severe. However, many vision-threatening conditions are treatable, and in many cases preventable, but the lack of access to screening and timely care means people often go without help until vision loss is advanced. Therefore, prevention and early detection is very important.

<div>We are two Canadian medical students launching the Ghana Eye Health Initiative to help reduce these health disparities through community-based vision outreach. We are partnering with the local health authorities to deliver screenings, provide vision support, give health education programming, and connect patients to follow-up care when needed.

<div>Our outreach will focus on common causes of vision loss, including silent pressure-related damage, lens clouding, age-related changes in central vision, and diabetes-related eye damage, with the goal of catching problems early and preventing avoidable blindness.

<div>* Recruitment and support of local ophthalmic nurses and clinic staff to help run screening stations, guide patient flow, and ensure follow-up pathways are clear.
