Modrac Lake is an artificial lake of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the municipality of Lukavac, touching and peripheral areas of the municipality of Tuzla and Živinice. Modrac lake is 12 kilometers long and wide on average 700 meters, with a maximum depth of 14 meters. The lake was created artificially by the weir built on the river Spreča.
Once upon a time, there were more than 15,000 visitors on its beaches, and today many people use it to dispose of garbage.
It was built in 1964 by building a dam on the river Spreča. Lake Modrac was one of the most popular bathing resorts in the Tuzla Canton area in the 1990s. Almost 15,000 tourists from Tuzla, Zenica and other places came to the "Bosnian Sea", as they called the lake.
People used whatever the lake could afford. The beach was well decorated and a large number of young people and families with children spent their free days sunbathing an swimming in Modrac Lake.
Unfortunately, in recent years, Modrac Lake can not boast water purity, a large number of households are directly exposed to adverse impacts of polluted water, and frequent cases that coastal dwellers have not been to the lake for many years. Things have changed drastically when mines, factories and industrial facilities started to leave huge amounts of polluted water in Lake Modrac at night. At night, in the light of the moon, you can see the spot where the river Spreča flows into the lake, because the whole stream of the river is marked by polluted water coming from the direction of Banovići and Đurđevik mines.
The big enemy of Lake Modrac are also people led by a poor example of the factory. They started leaving their own garbage in the lake. Thanks to all the bad impacts, the Modrac Lake now does not meet even the minimum environmental standards.
It is difficult to influence a large number of citizens and change their long-standing habit of delaying garbage in the lake and rivers flowing into it. It is necessary to put under control the discharge of wastewater, but also to solve the problem of waste disposal, or to prevent people throwing garbage into the lake. Much effort has to be done to remove the industrial sludge from the lake.
That is why the purpose of this project is to donate money so that the Modrac Lake can be cleaned and that citizens will awake the conscience and show that Lake Modrac is not only a past, it is our present and future. We want to stop irresponsible behavior and we invite all to help collect money for cleaning action, because Lake Modrac is our resource of drinking water, tourism and development at all.
