Classroom Dog: Helping kids with stresses/trauma
Donation protected
Science is showing that trained dogs can help kids (and adults) manage stress.
Whether from daily stressors to acute trauma, as a teacher I've seen firsthand how these animals can help kids in a school setting. As an added benefit, even kiddos with truancy issues start coming to school more. Kids become more aware of something outside of themselves, and work as a team to help their furry friend.
This year, I secured permissions, insurance riders, etc. to have a dog in my classroom. This took several years of work. But this last year, I began bringing my neighbor's dog, "Jamie," a highly trained lab, to my classroom each day.
Jamie talked kids out of running away from school, brought kids back inside to the office after defiance, and noticed and cheered kids who were in a sad state. All this after nothing else would work.
Our school is small (200 or do kids). All the kids interacted in some way with Jamie. He was even required to be in the end of year slideshow. Now it's time for Jamie to train a full-time replacement.
Jamie is a lab- a great breed for this. An even better breed for his replacement would be an English Cream Golden Retriever.
The cost of the new dog is very high, plus vaccinations, and some special training, etc. I've saved and fundraised a portion already, but can you help me to help kids in my school?
The dog will live at my house, but come to work with me every day.
I put the deposit down for the pup today. We will have pick of the litter (unheard of these days) because of how important temperament will be.
We have 7 weeks until we need to make the final payment.
