In 1993 Gabriella Lengyel, my violin teacher and great soloist and pedagogue passed away. With deep emotion I received a handwritten note she addressed to me a few days before her death. The note read, “I hope you pass the knowledge we have received from the past masters to the next generation of musicians.” With her words, I dedicated my life to that goal.

Fast forward to 2006 when I attended a performance given by classical saxophonist Javier Oviedo. In all my career as a classical musician, I had never heard such a beautiful tone from a saxophone and was transported with delight by Javier’s musicianship. I discovered the saxophone, widely known as a voice of Jazz, to be capable of a much wider range of sound and expression. It takes the skills of a highly talented and gifted musician to realize this.

- Jean-Pierre Schmitt, conductor and Artistic Director

Created in 2010, the Classical Saxophone Project is dedicated to the awareness of “the Hidden Voice” of the saxophone. Its goal is to promote the rich and vast repertoire of the instrument and to encourage the new generation of composers to explore its versatility.

“It is my hope for CSP to be a vehicle for Americans of Hispanic descent to have access and opportunity in classical music. I was lucky to be helped by the right people at the right time in my life to achieve all I have. For various personal reasons, many youngsters do not have this opportunity. An appreciation for the arts and the possibility of a future career begin at an early age.” - Javier Oviedo, saxophonist

During this time of COVID-19, these efforts are under threat. We transitioned to virtual classes for our current students and our 2020-2021 concert season will be completely online.

Your support will allow us to continue to create and expand our programming and provide opportunities for musicians of all levels.

Please support our efforts by giving to our GoFundMe campaign. Your contributions will help us honor Gabriella’s wish to pass the torch and prepare the next generation of classical musicians.
