Claire was prenatally diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome on December 27, 2013, at 22 weeks gestation. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) means that the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped and not functioning, which leaves Claire with half a heart. There is no cure for HLHS. The treatment comes in the form of at least 3 surgeries to help reroute the heart so the body can function on just the right side of the heart. Additionally, Claire has a genetic disorder called Turner Syndrome. This is likely what caused her heart defect and will also cause other issues later on in life (short stature, infertility, kidney issues, etc). When HLHS is combined with a genetic disorder, like Turner Syndrome, the mortality rate increases dramatically.
Claire was born on May 1, 2014 at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. She underwent her first open heart surgery (Norwood) on May 8th and her second open heart surgery (Glenn) on September 2nd. Below is a list of her major surgeries/procedures to date:
May 8- Norwood (Open Heart Surgery)
June 25- General Sugery- GTube insertion
July 18- Intervential Radiology- GJ Tube Conversion
August 18- Cardiac Catheterization
September 2- Glenn (Open Heart Surgery)
We know this will continue to be a tough road to travel including having to find the resources to support us through this journey.
