Costa Rican Marine Biology Research

Hello! My name is Claire, and I am a biology graduate student trying to make dreams come true!

Goal: Assess the community of rocky intertidal (tidepool) organisms in Costa Rica. I also plan to look at how nutrient supply, herbivory, and other factors affect these organisms.

Where: Costa Rica, both Caribbean and Pacific sides, at a minimum of 6 sites on either side. I will be doing this research during the dry season, from December to March.

Purpose: Costa Rica is one of the most species rich countries in the world, but most of our knowledge comes from rainforests and coral reefs, but not the coastline or the organisms that live there. Even the President of Costa Rica has written that there is a severe lack of knowledge of marine intertidal organisms. This research will help fill the gap in scientific understanding of this sensitive buffer area between land and sea.

Qualifications: Currently I am a Masters in Biology candidate at Cal Poly Pomona concentrating in marine ecology under the guidance of Dr. Jayson Smith and his Coastal Ecology Lab. My undergraduate degree is in Marine Biology from Cal State Long Beach and as part of my studies there I spent a semester doing marine research at USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Science on Catalina Island. I have loved the ocean for as long as I can remember, and when I decided I wanted to dedicate my life to studying and protecting it I have never wavered. I do love all marine animals, but I hold a special place in my heart for the snails and seaweeds, so while doing this research I know I will not miss the little ones.

All donations will come to make this opportunity a reality and to make this study more and more encompassing. Donations of

<$10 THANK YOU for food and coffee (which is VITAL)

<$20 THANK YOU for sunscreen and first aid

<$50 THANK YOU for a tank of gas

<$100 THANK YOU for helping with my explanation of WHY I am seeing certain organisms

>$100 THANK YOU for helping with insurance and other important safety documents

I want you to know that all donations will be used for research, and if by chance there is any leftover it will be used to aid in the analysis of the data and the writing for publication. I cannot explain how much these donations will help make this dream a reality, and I promise I will not let you down. Please follow me on Instagram @msbiologist and see how I am doing on my blog (coming soon!)

Thank you.
