Devon Bartholf Recovery Fund

On July 6th, 2014, our lives were forever changed. Devon was involved in a serious automobile accident in Elon, North Carolina, where she attends college. She was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center and then immediately flown to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. When family finally arrived from St. Louis and Philadelphia, we were told that her chances of survival were bleak. However, the Neuro team did not know our Devon and the amount of fight that she possesses.

The entirety of the injury sustained was to her head and brain. Devon arrived at the hospital with multiple skull fractures (open and closed), severe facial fractures, and four different types of brain bleeding. On day 5, Devon's brain swelled and caused her to suffer a stroke. In order for her to survive, she underwent a decompressive craniectomy. To allow for her brain to swell safely after the stroke, this surgery essentially removed a large portion of the front of her skull. She also has had a tracheostomy and some facial reconstruction procedures. She will soon undergo another surgery to reattach the front portion of her skull. All the while, she has still not "woken up".

Devon was in a coma for about three weeks but has recently progressed to a more "vegetative state". There is some awareness when exposed to physical and verbal stimuli. She will withdraw from pain, wiggle her fingers when asked, etc. Recovery from traumatic brain injury is measured in months and years, not days or weeks.

Devon's road to recovery is going to be extremely difficult and long. Not only will she have to undergo even more surgery to fix her body physically, the rehabilitation process will be intense. Devon most likely will have to re-learn everything. Regaining simple tasks such as how to talk, walk, and read will require months to years of both inpatient and outpatient care. The road to recovery is not only going to be physically and mentally draining, but also financially.

Since the accident, many friends and family have asked about donations. We have set up this site in order to help with Tammy and Michael's travel and lodging expenses, and Devon's medical/rehabilitation expenses. An address is also provided below, if you would rather send checks and eliminate the fees associated with this site. Please, do not feel obligated to give anything. The family and Devon would like prayers over all else. We have been so thankful for everyone's thoughts and prayers over the last month. Keep them up because they are working! Although Devon has fought hard for her life, she still has a long fight ahead of her.

For everyone who knows Devon, you also know our girl is not going to give up. She will be back with us before we know it. Thank you all.

Love,
The Bartholf Family
