AfroMexican Leaders to Change Lives

Coyolillo is a town of Afro-Mestizos, a town whose Mexican roots mix Spanish, indigenous and African ancestry, a town where an incredible group of young leaders are raising their voices and using their many talents to instill within the youth a sense of pride about all aspects of their heritage.

I first connected with the people in Coyolillo through the young leaders who run their cultural center, Casa Coyolillo.  With not much money, but lots of ganas (Spanish for desire) and creativity, Casa Coyolillo has achieved many of its goals.  Youth from Coyolillo participate in African dance and drumming classes, which they perform at local festivities.  Casa Coyolillo hosts theater classes, educates students at local schools and is planning the town's first Forum Against Racism for this year's carnival.

Daniela, Kely, Karen, Gaby, Maestro Hugo, Don Octavio, Enrike, Elvis and Felix make Casa Coyolillo happen.  They are a new generation of Afro-Mexican leaders and allies who are helping to solve problems in their community.  This November, they have a unique opportunity that you can help them with! These young leaders have an opportunity to attend the 19th Annual Conference of Afro-descendents in Coahuila, Mexico. At this conference, they will have the chance to connect with leaders from all over Mexico, some Latin American countries and even the United States.  It is truly an awesome opportunity for Casa Coyolillo to represent their community in the fight for constitutional recognition for Afro-Mexican peoples.  Casa Coyolillo is already doing their part to make visible a population that history, culture and education have invisibilized and attending this conference will take their leadership to the next level.

For Daniela, the conference represents "an opportunity to gain a wider perspective around the issues facing Afro-Mexicans, and the potential to work together to generate solutions to the most urgent problems."

And Maestra Gaby, who teaches African dance every Saturday to the youth says, "As a woman who practices African dance, and as a citizen in general, I want to attend the conference in order to solidify alliances and work in solidarity with the Afro-Mexican community."

In order to make this dream a reality, they need a little help in terms of dinero (money). Therefore, I offered to create this GoFundMe to help them with travel expenses.  Because GoFundMe does not exist in Mexico, funds will go to my US bank account, and I will purchase travel tickets.  And just to be clear, all funds raised go to the folks at Casa Coyolillo- no funds go to me.

All we need is 240 people to give $5!  I just checked, and I have double that amount of friends on Facebook!  And even if you can't give right now, if you re-post, I'm sure we can make it to 1200 friends, giving $1 each - it's $1 towards a piece of everlasting joy!

Thank you all for being the wonderful beings you are.

with much love and appreciation,
