City Wildlife Baby Shower

Tax deductible
Each spring City Wildlife receives a flood of orphaned wild babies of all varieties: rabbits, squirrels, songbirds, and many more. In fact, fully half of all the animals that City Wildlife admits each year come in between May 1 and July 31. On a busy day we are taking in a new patient every 15 minutes.

And raising the orphans is expensive. Even above the cost of all the food, cleaning supplies, cages, and equipment they need, there is the cost of hiring extra people to care for all the babies. Our payroll costs nearly double in these busy months.

We need your help to take care of these little ones and help them on their way to growing up healthy, strong, and self-reliant! The babies we raise are cute, but they are not just that. They are a part of the future of wildlife in our communities.

City Wildlife is the first and only wildlife rehabilitation center in the District of Columbia. Since it opened in 2013, the center has been accepting ill, injured, and orphaned native animals ― birds, small mammals, and native reptiles and amphibians ― every day of the year, weekends and holidays included. Approximately 2,000 animals per year are admitted. The animals’ care is overseen by a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, who works in a fully equipped clinic with digital x-ray, anesthesia machine, incubators, complete veterinary pharmacy, and a variety of housing and food options for many different species. In each case, the goal is to release a healthy animal capable of surviving on its own back to the wild.

City Wildlife staff responds to more than 5,000 telephone and email requests annually with information on wild animal behavior and advice on mitigating conflicts with wild animals in an effective and humane manner.

Other City Wildlife programs and efforts include Lights Out DC, Duck Watch, and advocacy to preserve green spaces in Washington.
