This GoFundMe account is not designed to garner pity, but to help our dear friend, mother, sister and daughter, Cindy McCarty. We also hope this might act as a message that while life is indeed fragile and sometimes cruel, the resilience and power of a woman stricken with tragedy can be both remarkable and inspiring.
In early April, 2015, Cindy was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Soon after, on April 29th, with her husband and best friend Craig by her side, she underwent a double mastectomy at the University Hospital of Philadelphia and was released several days later. Although feeling extremely sore and groggy from the surgery, and completely terrified for the numerous chemo and radiation treatments that await her, Cindy felt relieved to have had the surgery behind her and to once again see her loving husband and family who were waiting to take her home.
The same day that Cindy returned home from her surgery, her husband Craig was taken to the nearest hospital by a family member due to extreme stomach and back pain that he was experiencing. On May 1st he was admitted to Tyler Hospital, sent home with pain medication, then readmitted to Wilkes Barre General Hospital, sent home again, until he was finally admitted to CMC hospital on May 5th where he was diagnosed with liver cancer. By May 10th, he was transferred to University Hospital of Philadelphia where he had been days earlier caring for Cindy.
Unable to care for one another in their current conditions, Cindy, at home healing from her surgery, and Craig, sedated and undergoing a seemingly unending series of tests, they put their faith in the medical community and turned to agonizing respite praying for a healthy and speedy reunion.
On May 11th, Cindy received a call that things were much worse for Craig than anyone had anticipated. Physically and emotionally battered from her surgery and Craig’s unexpected health downturn, Cindy made the long trek back to Philadelphia. When she arrived they were informed his cancer was extremely aggressive, untreatable and that he only had a matter of days left to live. To which Craig, humble as always, responded, “Thanks for trying guys” before turning to his Cindy and asking, “Well Baby, what do you want to do tonight?” as it was Wednesday, their designated date night.
He was transferred to Hospice on May 14th, where Cindy stayed by his side until his last breath. Craig lost his battle with cancer on May16th in the company of family and friends that loved him, as Cindy would put it, “...to the moon and back.” Words do not have the power to convey the loss that Cindy and Craig’s family and friends continue to feel. Cindy and Craig’s love was a special kind of love. It was, well, love. The kind you see in movies. The kind we all aspire to experience. The substance of songs and the most salient art.
Over the past seven months, Cindy has undergone what must have felt like an unending series of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Then, in the midst of her treatments, this fall she was informed her and Craig’s beloved dog Noah also had cancer. Mere weeks from her final radiation therapy, Noah succumbed to his disease.
Although she continues to receive love and support from her and Craig’s families, Cindy has been unable to work since the onset of this string of tragedies and could use any financial help she could get. If you don’t know Cindy, know this: she is not one to ask for help. She has spent her entire life living for everyone else and has found happiness primarily in that of those around her. She would not ask for help from anyone, so we (her friends and family) are doing so on her behalf.
Despite having been diagnosed with cancer, unexpectedly losing the love of her life weeks later and her sweet dog soon after, Cindy continues to be a mother, a daughter, a sister, a cousin, an aunt, a niece, a friend and an inspiration. She continues to be strong despite all she has been through. She continues to be Cindy despite all that has changed.
