Cindy LaRue's Medical Retreat

HELLO, IT'S ME

I'm writing on behalf of myself (Michelle) and my sisters Jessica and Stephanie, to ask all of our amazing friends and loved ones for he..hel..HELP! It's one of those words that's difficult for a Koffler/LaRue to utter.

WHAT HAPPENED

Our mom, Cindy LaRue, has had both a challenging and miraculous several months. On January 9, 2016, she was admitted to the Marin General ER with severe stomach pain. Diagnosed with a perforated intestine, she was moved quickly to the ICU where she received round the clock triaged care for her symptoms. Her blood pressure dropped to crazy lows, her lactate levels were through the roof, all while her body was undergoing sepsis/septic shock and multiple organ failure.

A challenging colostomy surgery, intubation, tracheostomy, and decannulation later, and now here we are, both fatigued and relieved! Both the ICU intensivist and her surgeon admitted they didn't anticipate that mom would make it. But Cindy defied the odds. Anyone who knows her should not be surprised by her incredible strength and perserverance, aided by all of the love, prayers, and support sent her way.

THE ASK

Without delaying "the ask" too much further, my sisters and I humbly request a bit of a financial boost. I've been managing Cindy's bills while she focuses on recovery at the Kentfield Rehab Facility. Fortunately her MediCare, and now Medi-Cal I was able to enroll her in, are covering a tremendous amount of her expenses. However she is still responsible for the first $640+ a month before the secondary insurance will kick in. Cindy's ER/ICU bills have started to flow in with no end in sight, and the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) she will be moving to next wants to know how her bills will be covered before they accept her referral.

The doctors predict she will need at least another 2-3 months to recover from her surgery and learn to manage her wound care, to strengthen through physical therapy, and to learn to walk again. As we all know with her chronic back pain, bone spurs, and degenerative disc disease she has the world against her.

And in a cruel twist of fate Nellie, the woman our Mom has cared for and lived with over the past several years, passed away on March 31st. As you can imagine, the prospect of my mom losing her home and livelihood is a lot to bear while she is confined to a hospital bed.

WHERE THE $ GOES

If my sisters and I can raise this money, we will use it to guarantee mom's stay in the next facility, cover her past medical bills, and ideally squirrel some away for her move--all helping to put my mom at ease. For the first time in a long time she is only responsible for taking care of herself and her health. If we can remove some of the financial burden and stress, I hope she will find some greater peace for healing.

Ideally we would be able to secure these funds over the next two weeks so that we both cover the past expenses as well as set her up for success in the next facility. As you can imagine we are doing our best to provide all of the support we can for my mom, and with your help she will be able to continue her journey to being even stronger than before!

Every bit helps! With gratitude,
