Cindy Coates Little Angel Svc Dog

Hi,  my name is Carrie and I’d like to share a story with you that’s close to my heart, my sister Cindy’s struggle with a rare disease and her journey to a more independent life with the help of a non-profit organization Little Angels Service Dog.  Little Angels changes the lives of disabled adults and children through the amazing help Service Dogs offer.

My Sister has a rare disease called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis with myotonia and now has some permanent weakness on her right side. Hypokalemic periodic paralysis causes a drop in potassium that can result in episodic stiffness, cramping, spasms, weakness, along with many other symptoms and sometimes paralyses. This can affect a few muscles or many, and can last anywhere from hours to days. These episodes range from mild to severe. Once her potassium levels start normalizing the recovery process begins.
Through her determination and optimistic spirit she has tried her best to live an independent life however much to her dismay this is not an easy or always possible task. She has been encountering this health battle head on for over five years. Through the years she has had to learn her triggers as each persons is different. Her triggers are anything from her increase in asthma and allergy medications, to eating a high carb meal, rest after exercise, the environment such as heat, or humidity, to flashing lights, and a variety of other triggers. There are times she even needs the assistance of a wheelchair.  Which is why we are excited and so overjoyed that after the long application process, my sister was accepted, by a wonderful non-profit organizationLittle Angels Service Dogs. My sister is one of the kindest people I know, and A service dog will greatly help improve her independence and quality of life!

Little Angels Service Dogs is a collaboration of trainers and volunteers who strive to change the lives of the disabled through the help Service Dogs can offer. Disabled children and adults throughout the United States receive service dogs from Little Angels, this is made possible by donations and volunteers. Little Angles is a 503c non-profit organization.

In my Sister’s case, the service dog will be trained to perform a number of functions that will be tailored to her needs.  Some of those functions include a dog that will be trained to use a service dog phone, to call for help if my sister needs medical attention, and is unable to get to a phone.  This will give my sister the back up plan she needs while living alone, while giving our family A little piece of mind.  Her service dog will also be trained to retrieve items that she’s dropped or specific items like medication, which she can keep in her dogs vest.  Once Cindy receives her service dog, she will work with her dog to alert her (medical alert) when having a Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis episode so she can safely take medication as soon as possible. Having a service dog would be a life changer for my sister.  It will give her that much more confidence and comfort knowing she will have a fur-ever friend by her side to help with all the difficulties that arise with her disability, and allow her to remain the independent women she has always been.

Please consider sharing my sister’s story and, if you’re able, donate today to help us raise money for Little Angels Service Dogs to continue placing dogs with recipients all over the country.
