Our story is our prayer for a lift -equipped van. My husband Wally and I are both electric wheelchair users, retired and have been married for 11 years. We both receive disability benefits, so our income is very limited. To help supplement our income, Wally does light auto repair jobs and I knit and crochet items to sell, but it's not enough money for a newer van.
Our 1985 Ford van is still running, thanks to Wally's mechanical ability, but is no longer safe to drive. It's body is rusted so badly it's breaking away from the frame. A new van that we both could drive would cost over $100, 000. Most used vehicles don't have the equipment we need to drive.
We don't do much traveling, only what is necessary to survive. I haven't been anywhere in the past few years except doctors appointments and a few family events because of my fear of our van and the fumes from the exhaust leak.
We located a van in Georgia, a 1988 model, that is in excellent condition, and costs $4000. Wally's cousin, Norma Jean lives in Georgia and she and her husband thoroughly checked it over. We would use the remainder to transport the vehicle to Poplar Grove, IL, to seal and undercoat the body, for tax, title and transfer and to replace the driver transfer seat.
