Cinders' Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Cinders (now Clare) has endured having her nails severed off by nail clippers, her teeth snapped off by blunt force, placed in a burning hot oven, attempted forced-drowning in a toilet and then thrown into a bush like a piece of trash.

You may have seen Cinders' articles in the Courier Mail, firstly on December 13th, 2018 and again today, February 13th, 2019. We have had multiple enquiries from the general public asking if there is anything they can do to help. Firstly, this is the run down as it stands today...

Jiawen Zhang, an international student at UQ, has gotten out of serving time for his heinous abuse to Cinders (now Clare). He will not serve prison time, but has a record, so should he re-offend, he goes to jail. We can't imagine another animal having to endure what Cinders has had to, in order for Jiawen to serve any time.

His intention was to kill her, before being interrupted by our client returning home. Should they not have returned early from work, this story's end would be very, very different. As he didn't succeed in murdering Cinders, vet treatment was required and costs incurred. Jaiwen Zhang not only doesn't have to go to jail, it appears as though he also isn't required to pay a cent toward the care that we have provided in treating, and keeping alive, little Cinders.

Cinders (Clare) may require specialist dental attention if her dental health does not improve. The pads to her feet have grown together post-third and fourth degree burns, some toes not even having nails anymore because they were severed off with nail clippers. She forever bears the physical scars that hide the sheer brutality that was inflicted upon her; the torture that she did not ask for, that she did not deserve.

There were significant costs to treat Cinders - financially, emotionally, and physically for all involved with her round-the-clock care. There would be hours each day tediously soaking, debriding, drying her poor feet that sustained third and fourth degree burns. Meticulously peeling away dying tissue and applying creams, fashioning disposable booties that allowed her feet to remain as clean as possible in the hope that it would encourage healing so that amputation of her toes/feet wouldn't be required. Nurse Tahlia was at the clinic every single day caring for Cinders, also taking on her sister, Gina, and brother, Doug Judy, to ensure she had feline company and support to help her develop and grow like any normal kitten. It was a full-time job on top of a full-time job for Tahlia, and a real team effort for our incredible team here at Toowong Family Vet. Every staff member playing a role and providing their care and knowledge in order to help Cinders.

Her broken teeth have broken down and resorbed, and we are hoping that it doesn't affect the ability of her adult teeth to come through. If there are complications, it will likely require specialist dental attention and intervention, and therefore additional costs for this treatment.

We would - and *have* - done this out of our own pockets, at a cost/loss to us, because we care about what we do; because we care for those that need that care and attention; because Cinders - like all other abuse/torture victims - didn't ask for this to happen and certainly don't deserve anything but the right to live a life free of cruelty and abuse. We have a duty of care to look after the little ones that need it, however there are costs to do so.

Should you wish to make a donation to cover the costs of treatment to date, and any further treatment that she may need, please feel free to do so. As we've mentioned prior, if we don't receive any donations, we've already done the hard yards and are proud of everything we've done for her. We would never, ever change a single thing we've done or provided for her, based on anything to do with money, but every little bit helps and it may help her adoptive family with any ongoing costs that may pop up.
