Janet's Buckets

Nine years ago on October 6th, my friend, Janet Moltz, was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It was her daughter, Hannah's, tenth birthday.  Her son, Alexander, was seven.

Since her diagnosis with stage 4 breast cancer Janet has undergone chemotherapy all but one year.  Six different chemotherapies in all.  She had double mastectomies and reconstruction.  She had a complete hysterectomy and endured early menopause.  She had three courses of radiation - to her neck, chest wall, pelvis and back. She has taken three different hormone therapies.

During all of this treatment she has been raising her babies, cutting hair when she feels up to working, and making adventures for herself and her children.  And being an amazing friend.

Alexander is now a Sophomore in high school.  Hannah has just left for college at NYU on a scholarship.  And Janet's disease progression has been escalating.  The cancer cells are growing in her bones despite the treatments she has received.  She is starting one last chemotherapy next week.

Janet shared with me some dreams she would like help with for the time that she has left.  You might think she would want to take an extravagent trip to Greece, or get a fancy red convertible (those would be my bucket list items!).  Instead this single mom has three buckets:  holidays, food, and a sanctuary.  She wants to take Alexander to New York for Thanksgiving week to see Hannah and spend a week in The Big Apple, she wants to buy herself a new mattress and fix up her bedroom so it feels like a sanctuary, and she wants to be able to buy healthy groceries for herself and Alexander at Whole Foods and pick out an occasional bouquet of flowers to brighten her house.  And she wants to be able to buy Hannah a plane ticket home for Christmas.

That's it.  A family trip, a simple bedroom makeover, food, and a way to get her daughter home for Christmas.

Between now and October 6th, the ninth anniversary of her diagnosis, I am raising $9,000 for Janet's wishes.  One thousand dollars for every year she has lived with cancer.  Please donate to the fund and share the link.  You'll be blessed to be a blessing!

(You may be thinking you'd like to donate plane tickets, and that is a lovely thought. AND Janet has some specific travel needs that require her to make her own arrangements, so travel miles will not work out for her needs.)
