Sierra Elizebeth Eckard is twenty two years old. She was diagnosed with crohn's disease three years ago. She was on several different medications to treat the disease most of which did little or nothing to help with her pain. On January 20th 2014 she had an appointment with her doctor, she was in a lot of pain in her lower right abdomen. She was immediately sent to the emergency room where a scan was done revealing a perforation in her small bowel, surgury was eminent. Her appendix, the perforation, and fourteen inches of inflamed damaged intestine were removed. She was released on the 25th of January. She continued to have lots of pain after recovery from surgury. On February 26th a colonoscopy was done and she was, again, admitted to the hospital where they discovered a blood clot in her pulmonary embolism and she had an infection. She was prescribed more medications, antibiotics, and blood thinners. She was released March 19th. March 20th she was re-admitted due to pain. March 25th she was transferred to KU Med and treated for C-dif. She was released March 30th. April 15th admitted to KU Med for pain and C-dif again. Released April 22nd. May 14th re-admitted to KU Med for more of the same. May 28th she was released and paperwork was started for acceptance to Mayo Clinic. June 19th at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN scans and other testing reveal active crohn's, a leak in anastomosis, and two large abscess. Surgery was performed at Mayo to remove abscess' and to remove/repair more intestine. She was released from Mayo June 28th. On July 1st she went back to KU for lots of pain and trouble breathing. She was sent home that same day. July 15th she was back again for blood in her stool. She was admitted to the ICU were she was treated for low hemoglobin. A scan was done and it revealed more small abscess. Released July 17th. July 30th admitted for excessive bowels, pain, very high fever, and accelerated heart rate. A scan revealed "numerous" abscess (too many to count) and inflammation of the colon wall.
It has been a long difficult battle for Sierra. Her pain, continued treatment, and surgery are ongoing, but we are trying to keep positive. To date she has had countless x-rays, twenty seven scans (CT and MRI,) and been unable to work for the last eight months due to the pain, frequency of doctor visits, and extended hospital stays. Now, she is currently prepping for her eighth colonoscopy.
She would very much like to thank anyone and everyone who can donate to help on the overwhelming amount of medical bills that are piling up. Your contribution is very much appreciated. Our hopes are to reach a goal of $4,000.00 towards her growing debt. Thanks so much.
