Cielo y tierra por Juan José

See English below.

Heaven and Earth for Juan José

In June 2018, Juan José was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in the central nervous system, a High-Grade Leptomeningeal Tumor so aggressive and rare that there are only about 50 cases in the United States today. Juan José is a 7-year-old Colombian boy, basketball lover and dog-enthusiast. Two months ago he only worried about doing well in school and playing with his little brother; and today, by unfortunate fate, he is fighting for his life along with his parents Andrés and Natalia, and his stuffed pet-dog Tomasito.

The Journey they have been forced to undertake has not only been unexpected, but also emotionally, physically and economically challenging. In the face of such an aggressive and rare cancer, they had no choice but to leave Colombia and travel to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, in search for the best available treatment and a hope for Juan José’s life. They left their jobs, family and normal lives behind, and today they are facing, in addition to what no parent should ever face, an enormous economic pressure due to their medical expenses in the U.S. (given that their Colombian insurance has no coverage there). Currently they must pay for their travel expenses, lodging, treatments, hospitalization, medication, food and medical exams. Just to put it into perspective: one night of hospitalization costs US $2,565; a set of MRIs for head, neck and torso costs US $24,355, and Proton Therapy, one of the 3 needed cancer treatments, costs US $70,000. Juan José himself has offered to pay for the bills with the money he’s been saving for a Nintendo system, but we want him to care only about recovering his health, and nothing more. We want him and his parents to be relieved of a part of their financial distress, so they can focus on what is really important right now.

Those of us who know and love Juan José are united around him and inspired by his courage. To us, every possible percentage of hope is our 100%.

Help us keep moving heaven and earth for Juan José! All your donations will be of great help to do it.

With all our love,
Juan and Diana (uncle and aunt)
