5 years ago Kevin Hinxman moved out to Cyprus for a better and more relaxed way of life. He took early retirement from British airways after working with them for 31 years and took the plunge. He has had lots of different jobs in Cyprus and finally found one he enjoyed doing, which was working for Avis car rentals, but despite this he was determined he wanted to move back to the UK to further his career with British airways, as they say home is where the heart is. He dearly misses his grandchildren so he was wanting to get back to the job he once loved.
On June 28th 2014 - This day dad was due to fly back to the UK as he had an interview with British airways for his old job. Unfortunatley dad took a very nasty fall at home, which he ended up hitting his head, he was then rushed to hospital in an ambulance and had to be transferred to Nicosia hospital as this is the only hospital on the island that deal with head injuries, we were then asked to make a very big decision of putting him through a head operation which at the time he only had a 30% chance of survival, despite this thankfully he pulled through without any complications. For the first week he was in a coma and continued to be in icu for another 2 weeks, he was then moved to a high dependency ward as he still needed 24hr care. After 4 weeks he was stable enough to be moved to the Famagusta general hospital where he could continue treatment and also to be closer to us. So dad will be carrying on the treatment he needs there. Dad will be due to have another head operation in hopefully 4 weeks time and after this, once dad is stable again and able to fly we will be flying him back to the UK.
Our reasons for this is so he can get the right care and rehabilitation he needs for his injuries and we have also been told by several doctors and nurses that he would be best to go back to the UK as they have better rehabs there for what he will need for his recovery, as Cyprus does not.
We are trying to raise funds because when he is ready to fly back to the UK hopefully he will be able to fly on a commercial plane either on a seat being supported or on a stretcher but dad will also have to be accompanied by a doctor or a nurse which all costs and this is not covered on the private medical insurance he has. We are not sure on a definite amount as we are still waiting for quotes etc.. but if we raise more than needed then this will go towards helping other head injury charities in the UK.
So please help our dad to give him the best that he deserves he is such a loving, caring thoughtful family man who really does deserve the best care.
