Help Chuck Silsby's Recovery

On March 1, 2017, Chuck's life changed dramatically, when he found out his appendix had burst releasing gangrene into his body.  Unfortunately, infection spread into his bloodstream and Chuck was diagnosed with Sepsis, and then by Sunday March 5, he was in the throws of Septic Shock. Almost all of his organs had shut down. I received a dreaded phone call at 3 a.m. that Mom and Dad were going in to say goodbye. By God's grace and Chuck's sheer will and determination, he held on. His liver failed, his kidney's failed, and he was placed on dialysis. He was placed on a respirator and then on an ECMO machine in an effort to save his life.  As infection ravaged his body, he endured 15 surgeries, over 75 blood transfusions, and three weeks in the ICU. In the end the only way to survive was to amputate his entire right leg at the hip. This is the most difficult type of amputation, but Chuck is determined to get back to living his life. His hospitalization over the last few months has resulted in over 1 million dollars in medical bills, which was mostly covered by insurance. Thank goodness for the talented team at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.  The amazing team of doctors and nurses there saved his life!

To complete his recovery Chuck needs a prosthetic leg. His insurance will cover some of the new leg, but not all of it. He also needs help making some modifications to his home to allow him to live independently which includes taking care of his dog, Cutty. Chuck's road to recovery has been long and everything is different for him now.  Chuck is trying to get back to work, but his recovery has met a few setbacks which have  required additional hospitalizations. He still has multiple doctors' appointments each week and his left foot is still healing. He will lose part of the toes on that foot due to the high doses of blood pressure medicine given to him to save his life.

Anything you can do to help Chuck adjust to his new life would be greatly appreciated. We want to help him get this new "Bionic" leg, build him railings and a fenced in area for his dog so he can safely let his dog in and out, and help him make alterations to his living area to accomodate his wheelchair and crutches.  I have never seen anything like this before.  Septic shock is an unrelenting illness.  What Chuck has been through was remarkably difficult, but what has left a lasting impression on me is his will to live. I truly believe he is still here for a reason. Thank you for helping him!
