Real Life Foursquare Church is taking on the Family Services Division of DSHS.
The Family Services division of the Department of Health and Social Services (DSHS) is most well known for their roles in facilitating the foster care system. The social workers who work in Family Services are those that facilitate the removal and reunion of kids with their parents.
Clark County is home to roughly 10% of all foster kids in the state of Washington. This is SUCH a vital service, and the need here is overwhelming. After interviewing several social workers at the office we learned that their biggest practical need currently is shoes.
Many of the kids show up with no belongings and shoes that aren’t adequate.
Here's the exact words from Amber Peck, the Office Manager of Family Services, after we shared the idea of a shoe drive:
"Wow, this would be incredible! Shoes would be the biggest blessing! Starting from toddler sizes and up. Whatever you can get would be
absolutely fantastic. I can’t say enough how truly grateful we would be. Shoes are the hardest thing to come by for our agency, truly."
When asked what sizes we should get Amber said,
"The majority of kids we have in care are 6-13. However 1-5 year olds and 13-16 year olds are forgotten quite often - a few pairs for each size in those categories would be amazing."
Our hope is to supply over 300 pairs of shoes by Christmas 2018 (as of 11/27/18 we have 192 pairs!).
For some of these kids it might be the first pair of brand new shoes they’ve ever owned. Thank you for being awesome!
