<div><strong>UPDATE AS OF 9/17/25</strong>: We are so grateful to all of you for your support, donations, prayers, and sharing Christy's story. Christy continues to be healing well and getting  stronger each week. She was seen on Monday at the Transplant Clinic and overall received a good report. Her labs were good with only slight changes to her medications. She still has a lot of healing to do and a huge amount of bills to pay. We don't usually ask for help, but there is no way for her to get these bills paid without your help. Please share her story and if you are in a position to donate, we thank you. <div><strong>CHRISTY'S STORY</strong>:  Christy’s story began in May, 2021 when she lost her precious 4 month old grandson. Just days after his funeral, she was admitted to the hospital with blood clots in both legs and her abdomen. Over the next couple weeks she was in and out of the hospital. During her 4th admission, a lumbar puncture was done, resulting in a bilateral subdural hematoma which left her with permanent brain damage. That hospitalization lasted a month. After leaving the hospital, she spent 3 weeks in a rehab facility, learning to walk and talk again. Due to the brain damage, she was not able to return to work. She continues to be followed by numerous specialists.

<div>Christy seemed to have one health issue after another, requiring more hospitalizations, yet never getting any better. She was later diagnosed with NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) which rapidly developed into end-stage liver disease. She was getting sicker and sicker, requiring frequent paracentesis to remove the fluid from her belly and esophageal vertical banding to stop the bleeding in her esophagus. She was placed on the Liver Transplant List. She was so sick, she feared she wouldn’t get a donor liver in time to save her life.

<div>GOD HEARS OUR PRAYERS. In the afternoon of Saturday, August 2, 2025, she got the call from the Medical University of SC Transplant Team, informing her they had a liver for her and she needed to be at the Charleston MUSC hospital by midnight.

<div>She was taken in for surgery on Sunday morning. Five hours later the doctor came out and told us she had come through the surgery and her new liver was working well, but due to some complications, she would need to go back into surgery the following day to complete the procedure. They kept her intubated and sedated and completed the surgery on Monday. She remained intubated and sedated for 4 days and on August 6, they began lowering her sedation and were able to remove the breathing tube.

<div>During the long period of sedation, her kidneys began to fail and she was on dialysis for the next 10 days. Her kidney function has now improved, no longer requiring dialysis.

<div>Christy was discharged from the hospital on August 15. She had to remain in Charleston to be close to the hospital and Liver Transplant Team so upon discharge, we moved to a nearby hotel where we stayed until she was released to go back home on August 26. She will return to Charleston weekly for a while, then bi-weekly for labs and visits to the MUSC Transplant Clinic.

<div>We are all so grateful for this donor liver and the chance for Christy to live and enjoy life again. Her son said he was just watching her die a little more each day. Now she has a smile on her face and color in her cheeks again. We are all so thankful for this blessing.

<div>Christy’s medical bills over the past 4 years have been enormous. And now, the estimated cost of a liver transplant, without complications, is up toward $1 million. Recovery from a liver transplant takes a year at a minimum. She is currently on 29 different medications, some to resist rejection and some to resist infection. There are expenses for traveling to and from Charleston and hotel rates in Charleston are not cheap. Christy has never asked for help in the past, but now she needs your help. If you are able, any contribution, no matter the amount will help. If you’re not in a position to help, thats okay, we understand.
