Christopher Simila was in a serious snowboarding accident March 4, 2015 at Big Bear, while boarding with his dad, Eric. He was airlifted down to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, CA. After two CT scans and an MRI scan the doctors found many injuries. He has fractures in 4 of his thoracic vertebrae, a fractured C6 in his neck, a fractured right scapula, and a fractured first right rib. The doctors are astounded he was not paralyzed by these injuries.
Christopher had surgery on his back on March 6th. They put in titanium rods, screws and bone in a procedure called Posterior Spinal Fusion Surgery. He is expected to have full recovery of all movement and sensation with this surgery. The fracture in his neck is worse than they initially thought, however, neck surgery at this point is not necessary. He will be required to wear a neck brace 24/7 for 3 months with X-rays often to monitor the fracture. If the spine shifts and is not healing as it should then it will require surgery. Please pray it heals on its own perfectly! He also has numbness down his left arm to his thumb and pain. The doctors believe this is connected to the neck fracture. Please pray this is not a permanent injury.
Christopher and his wife, Kristle are expecting their first child, a girl, the beginning of May. Kristle is trying her best to stay stress free during this time and take care of herself and baby girl. The doctors ensure them that Christopher will be well enough to hold his baby and be there for the birth. He will be in a neck brace but he will be there none the less. They feel so blessed he is alive, not paralyzed and will have full movement over time.
There will be many expenses incurred as a result of this accident. Christopher will be unable to work for an unknown length of time and baby is coming. They need the help of all of us... their friends and family!
