<div>Recently, over the summer, my family and I had an opportunity to visit and volunteer at the orphanages at the Saint-An Orphanage. It is located in the diocese of Bui Chu, which is 120km from Hanoi, Vietnam. We spoke to some and were very inspired by their resilience and outlook on life. Coming back, we felt compelled to share its story and mission with others to raise money to allow them to carry on their work.

<div>The Saint-An Orphanage was established in 1852 by founder St. An (Joseph Diaz Sanjuro, OP) to collect disabled or abandoned orphans, with its motto being: “To welcome, to raise, and to educate the orphans, handicapped, and paralyzed children under 12 years old and provide shelter and education without distinction of religion.”

<div>The values and mission that it was initially founded for are still being carried out today thanks to the religious sisters who selflessly serve the orphanage. Children who have been abandoned or orphaned are taken in and cared for by the sisters until they have learned the essential skills necessary for their independent lives in society. Those who are paralyzed, disabled, mentally handicapped, or have any other debilitating ailment are cared for the rest of their lives.

<div>Here is a statement from one of the sisters who works at the orphanage:
</div>
<div>“Smart children at the age of 4 are all enrolled in kindergarten with friends in the community to help them confidently enter first grade and are always encouraged to finish high school. The orphanage takes care of those who cannot be independent for the rest of their lives. Children with hearing and visual impairments are also sent to study at specialized schools. Children who are capable of studying at a university, college, or vocational school are still encouraged to continue studying. The orphanage is always a warm home for them to return to if they have no place to stay, as long as they know how to cooperate in common work.” (translated from Vietnamese) – Sister Anna Phạm Thị Tươi

<div>This orphanage and the people they serve are heavily dependent on outside support. It has only been able to carry out its charitable mission thanks to benefactors and their generous donations/contributions.

<div><strong>Every contribution, no matter the size, will directly go to and support the orphanage.</strong> The number of people currently being cared for at the orphanage is 98 in total. There are 7 infants, 19 children in primary school, 23 children in secondary and high school, 7 children in college/vocational school, 26 disabled, paralyzed, or mentally ill children, and 16 people who have graduated from university, college, vocational school, or are self-employed.

<div>On average, a set of clothes and a pair of shoes for one child will cost roughly $31 (800,000 Vietnamese dong). Counting the children from primary school students to vocational training groups, there are 75 children, making the total estimate around $2,325 (60,000,000 Vietnamese dong). <strong>This will be their Christmas present :)</strong>

<div>There are also additional funds needed to sustain the orphanage, including food, maintenance costs, tuition, and other various expenses, which will be the other $2,700. Thank you so much for all the support that you can give.

<div>(In Vietnamese)   MÁI ẤM CÔ NHI VIỆN THÁNH AN BÙI CHU Nhà Thiên Thần hay còn được gọi là Nhà Dục Anh và hiện nay có tên gọi là Cô Nhi Viện Thánh An Bùi Chu, tọa lạc tại thôn Bùi Chu, xã Xuân Ngọc, huyện Xuân Trường, tỉnh Nam Định, Việt Nam. Nay là xã Xuân Trường, tỉnh Ninh Bình, Việt Nam. Cô Nhi Viện Thánh An là một cơ sở bác ái thuộc quyền Giáo Phận quản lý và điều hành, Hiện tại là Cha Giuse Phạm Ngọc Oanh là Giám đốc và Quý Sơ thuộc Hiệp Hội Tông Đồ Bác Ái Thánh An đang phục vụ tại đây. Cô Nhi Viện có bề dày lịch sử lâu đời nhất miền Bắc Việt Nam và cũng là nơi đón nhận nhiều mảnh đời bất hạnh bị bỏ rơi để nuôi dưỡng và giáo dục thành những người trưởng thành. Nguồn kinh phí để điều hành, nuôi dưỡng, giáo dục các em chủ yếu do chính các sơ thuộc Hiệp Hội Tông Đồ Bác Ái Thánh An lao động bằng các ngành nghề và nhờ sự giúp đỡ từ các ân nhân xa gần, cho nên nguồn kinh tế còn phụ thuộc vào nhiều yếu tố khác nhau. Vì vậy, chúng tôi luôn mong muốn Quý Ân Nhân quan tâm đến các em mồ côi và khuyết tật tại Cô Nhi Viện Thánh An Bùi Chu. Nhân dịp ngày lễ Giáng Sinh, chúng tôi mong muốn mua cho mỗi em một đôi dép, một bộ quần áo trị giá từ 600 – 1 triệu đồng. Tính các em từ học sinh cấp 1 đến nhóm học nghề là 75 em, trung bình mỗi em là 800.000 đồng. Ước tính khoảng 60 triệu đồng. Các sơ xin tiền mặt để mua cho phù hợp với từng em về kích cỡ, kiểu dáng và màu sắc. Số lượng các em đang được nuôi dưỡng hiện nay tại Cô Nhi Viện là 98 em 7 em: Nhóm tuổi sơ sinh 19 em: Nhóm học sinh cấp I 23 em: Nhóm học sinh cấp II và cấp III 07 em: Nhóm học cao đẳng và học nghề 26 em: Nhóm khuyết tật, bại liệt và thần kinh 16 em: Nhóm đã tốt nghiệp đại học, cao đẳng, học nghề, và làm nghề tự do.

<div>Tình trạng chung của các em phần đông mồ côi không có cha mẹ và một số em có hoàn cảnh gia đình khó khăn. Những em khôn ngoan khi lên 4 tuổi đều được gia nhập trường mẫu giáo cùng các bạn ngoài cộng đồng để giúp các em tự tin vào lớp một và luôn được khuyến khích học hết PTTH. Những em thần kinh bại liệt, nửa khôn nửa dại không thể tự lập. Cô Nhi Viện nuôi dưỡng chăm sóc cho đến hết đời các em. Những em khiếm thính, khiếm thị cũng được gửi đi học ở các trường chuyên biệt. Em nào có khả năng học đại học, cao đẳng hay trung cấp chuyên nghiệp vẫn được khuyến khích học tiếp. Em nào không học tiếp thì được khuyến khích học một nghề trước khi ra ngoài sống tự lập. Cũng có những em không muốn vào một lớp học nghề có quy tắc kỷ luật mà thích tìm việc tự do, những em này thường thất bại sớm. Cô Nhi Viện luôn là mái ấm để các em có thể quay về nếu các em không có nơi nào để tá túc, miễn là các em biết cộng tác trong công việc chung. Trong quá trình học tập và làm việc, các em gặp được người bạn đời muốn xây dựng gia đình, Cô Nhi Viện cộng tác lo thủ tục cần thiết và tổ chức đám cưới cho các em. Con số các em nữ đã lập gia đình là 8 em.
