Christmas for the Displaced Children of Artsakh

This year has been difficult for us all, to say the least. But it has been especially difficult for the children of Artsakh, who not only have had to contend with the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, but currently live displaced from their homes due to the Karabakh/Artsakh War of 2020. Many of them will not have a home to return to.
Far from home, away from friends, and in some cases coping with the loss of loved ones. For many of these children, Christmas and New Year appears to be a bleak and cold season looming ahead, where too much and too many are missed.
Many governmental and independent organizations, as well as individuals, continue to work tirelessly to provide families displaced by the recent Karabakh/Artsakh War with essential food and shelter. However, with this project we wish to fill a role for the three hundred families currently taking shelter in our hometown of Nor Geghi. Working in tandem with the authorities of our hometown, our aim is to provide the children of Karabakh/Artsakh with Christmas presents and tasty treats this holiday season, and show them that even though times are almost unbearably rough, they are loved and never forgotten.
The Republic of Artsakh, with a population of 150,000 (mostly ethnic Armenians) is a breakaway state in the South Caucasus supported by the Republic of Armenia, but internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.
Although a ceasefire to hostilities had been in place since 1993, on 27th September 2020, a premeditated attack by Azerbaijan, with support from Turkey, broke the ceasefire which escalated into war. The fighting lasted for 45 days and ended on 10th of November 2020, when Russia intervened with a new ceasefire agreement, which Armenia was forced to sign in order to de-escalate the situation and prevent further casualties and losses. This agreement has resulted in Armenia handing over a large swath of Artsakh to Azerbaijan, leaving many of the Armenians who’ve been living in Artsakh for centuries homeless. Approximately 90,000 refugees fled to Armenian to seek safety and refuge.
We want to show them that the Christmas holidays remain a time for hope.
We invite you to join us to ensure that — to the best of our ability — no child from these families will be left without a present from Father Christmas.
The aim of our project is to raise enough funds to buy and package a small gift for all of the children. A few examples of gifts that have already been distributed are puzzles and games; colouring books with pencils and crayons; arts and crafts supplies; footballs and chocolates.
Please join us on our mission to ensure that no child is left without a present under the tree.
