Christine's Treatment and Recovery

Spende geschützt
Hello family and friends,

A little over a month ago, Christine and I began a very unexpected and difficult journey. I took Christine to the ER with symptoms similar to a very bad sore throat, where she was later diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). This type of leukemia is very fast acting, so the doctors immediately admitted her to the oncology unit, where she began chemotherapy only a few days later.

Her bone marrow did not respond to the first round of chemo, so we then were given the option to try a clinical trial that was being offered at UCSF. We agreed that the clinical trial would be best, so she was transported to San Francisco and began the clinical trial chemo a couple days later. Currently, she is recovering from the clinical trial chemo at UCSF and awaiting a bone marrow biopsy to tell us the results.

Our goal and plan from here is to receive the results that she is in remission, find a good bone marrow match, and undergo a bone marrow transplant by the end of October, which begins the long recovery process.

This obstacle has not only been mentally and physically exhausting, but has also been a great financial burden. Christine will be out of work for at least one year and will only be receiving a portion of her regular pay check (at unknown dates). Being one of her designated caregivers, I am having to take a lot of time off of work, and I have not been able to work my second job to offset the loss of money. We were very reluctant to ask for any financial help until now.

The bone marrow transplant requires at least a month's stay in the hospital, and at least three months of living within a certain radius of the hospital, in the event of an emergency (that being UCSF). She will also be required to come back for appointments twice per week following the three months, then eventually less and less as time goes on. These appointments will continue until she receives the news that she has been cancer free for 5 years. Christine is fortunate enough to have health insurance, however, many necessary expenses will not be covered.

The money from this gofundme account will go towards the following:

-lodging in San Francisco for Christine and caregivers during bone marrow transplant
-transportation between Sacramento and San Francisco for appointments (2 times per week following her 3 month stay in the area)
-assistance with regular bills
-various items for her comfort including clothes that fit her current weight (due to weight loss from treatment) like sweaters, hats, socks, etc.
-unforeseen expenses (if more treatment is necessary, longer stay away from home, etc.)

We are so grateful for every person in our lives and sincerely appreciate all of your kindness. Although this has been the most difficult setback that either of us could've ever imagined, the love and support from family and friends has given us so much to be thankful for. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you so much.

-Victor and Christine
