Christina Garcias Senior Collection

My name is Christina Maria Garcia, I am currently a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design, pursuing a BFA in Accessory Design. I am working on my Senior Collection which consists of 6 items handmade by me. My vision for this collection was to create a unique experience with the customer interaction with the accessories. I have combined various technologies to create a hybrid of materials which shift in color and appearance depending on temperature, sunlight, water, and light reflection.

Born in Miami, Florida to Cuban Immigrants, I am a first generation Cuban-American who holds my roots and hispanic heritage very close to my heart. Much of my inspiration comes from my mother and grandmother keeping up with trends and holding an appreciation for luxury and quality fashion pieces. Neither of these two women are afraid of standing out and their strength from fleeing Cuba and bold personalities are expressed through their style. I am inspired by this beautiful form of expression. This bold and fearless attitude has shaped me as a designer as well as a person.

I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember and thanks to my family I have been incredibly blessed to be able to study what I'm passion about. Making and designing shoes and handbags is what I truly love and I hope to continue doing into my future. Through my projects I strive to push limits in fashion and experiment with materials in unexpected ways. This fund was created to help me finish my final collection which will showcase everything I have learned throughout my education and propell me into my future.

"The metamorphosis of this collection exists outside of its comfort zone"

This is an idea that has been made possible through months of research. Every product is handmade from design to prototype development to the final functional products. The print is designed and screen printed by one of my collaborators, Roberta Lebed. This print consists of screen printing, airbrush, and heat transfer elements. I am in the process of sourcing all of these materials to make this idea possible in the way that I envision it. I would like to continue taking this idea further and challenge new ways that this combination of technologies can be used.

How does it work?

While wearing these products, the user experiences color changes within the first seconds of contact with the body. Once the user picks the shoe up off the shelf their body temperature will activate the color change which will continue to transform as the shoe comes in contact with the foot. This will happen similarly with the bags as they interact with the body and the environment throughout the day.

I truly believe in this concept and project and I am asking for your help in taking it to its full potential. I cannot express how much I would appreciate any help you can offer, anything helps.

Please view the video for a preview of the project.

If you are willing to donate $100 or more I will make you a handmade bracelet with the print as a thank you for supporting this project.
