THE CAUSE – WORLD YOUTH INTERNATIONAL
WYI has provided access to basic services such as healthcare and education for more than 15,000 people. Their school, in Gorkana, Nepal, caters for students up to year 10 and currently
has over 500 students. With support from Computershare, the WYI school will be extended to include schooling for year 11 and 12 students.
Trek Nepal 2018 is raising funds to go towards the construction of a hostel allowing year 11 and 12 students to live on campus and attend the WYI school. Currently some students travel great
distances every day to get to the school and can’t get there when the weather is poor. I feel passionately that children should all be given the opportunity to develop and flourish irrelevant of their background which building this hostel will help do.
THE TREK – GHOREPANI POON HILL
I will join WYI and Computershare colleagues from the UK, Ireland, Jersey, Barcelona, Denmark, Frankfurt, Madrid, Munich, Rotterdam, Stockholm and South Africa on a Ghorepani Poon Hill trek from 20 November to 1 December 2018 in the Annapurna region of Nepal.
On a personal note this will be a particularly demanding trek. I have lived with type 1 diabetes for the vast majority of my life and while I have never let it rule my life I have to acknowledge that a trek over such a period of time in the Himalayas will provide some real challenges. From monitoring my blood sugar levels whilst trekking for up to 8 hours a day surviving on an unaccustomed diet, to ensuring my medication is kept safely at the correct temperature.
I relish the opportunity to raise money to give more children hope.
