10-25 for a cop who’s fighting

Many of us have faced the challenge of a loved one diagnosed with cancer. In SFPD we have the chance to be there for each other to make a difference to people fighting this disease.   In this case, Lieutenant Chris Martinez is battling her most difficult fight, and frankly, she needs our help.

For over 25 years Chris has been a 10-8 cop, working the Bayview, (the Po’), Taraval, and most recently SFO.  Throughout her career, Chris could always be counted on to be there for her fellow cops and her troops.  She worked hard to rehab from several injuries in her career; always intent on returning to her passion of being an SFPD cop.

In April, Chris began experiencing pain in her left rib area, which she took to be a badly pulled muscle.  As days passed the pain grew more severe, eventually making taking a breath excruciating.  A trip to the ER on May 20th led to a stunning diagnosis on the 24th: stage 4 lung cancer.  As Chris and her wife Nicole moved through the next few days, the diagnosis expanded to include tumors in the lymph nodes, invasion of the abdominal wall, and eventually tumors in her ribs.  While surgery is not an option due to the extent of the invasion, Chris and Nicole committed to an aggressive and comprehensive treatment plan to beat this disease, which includes radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and interventional surgeries. The disease and treatments are exhausting and Nicole has had to leave her over 20 year career in the beginning of June to be there full time for Chris.

We can help our fellow cop right now in a way that will make a big difference for Chris and her ability to fight this disease.  Chris and Nicole had a life plan, which for Chris included years more of service to the City.  Now they must focus everything on getting Chris well.  The stress of neither of them working is compounded by the huge financial drain of medical bills.  Pride Alliance has established Go Fund Me account to help take some strain off this family and allow Chris and Nicole to focus on their fight.  While we can’t know what the outcome will be, we do know that lending this hand will give them a peace of mind that allows them to keep moving forward in the fight.

In December, between treatments for Chris, Pride will be hosting a night out for all of us so Chris and Nicole can see and thank their friends.  Connecting with friends and feeling our support is a big weapon in the fight against cancer.  Please consider contributing to the Go Fund Me Account and watch for the Save the Date for our get together with a friend.
