MUSH”
Roughly 20 years ago our friend Chris Misciagna (now 49yrs of age), was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Onset of symptoms began shortly after working at ground zero as a first responder with sanitation.. He, as well as so many of us that are closest to Chris and love him dearly were devasted by the news, not fully understanding the depth of this disease. For years Chris had made mention of the pain in his legs, back and loss of feelings in his extremities, but most of us thought it was just due to his tireless work ethic. Always working long hours doing labor intensive jobs starting at an early age at his Dad’s gas station, countless odd jobs, and finally the NY Sanitation Department. Little did we know the crippling effect that it would cause on our strongest friend, Chris.
He continues to fight the good fight, never giving up, has been on medication for years, gone through many back surgeries with the “hope” that the MS wasn’t really the problem. He’s had physically therapy, acupuncture and cryotherapy; some of which have helped but sadly, for only brief periods. The aggressiveness of this disease has forced Chris to walk with a walker, use a motorized scooter, and leave him extremely frustrated from not being able to just do normal everyday activities. We’ve watched his health decline over the years. We’ve watched Chris try to adapt to his “new normal.” Little by little we’ve watched him do less and less and nothing about that is “normal.” The stress of MS, has been not only difficult for Chris but for his beautiful, loving family. I know his wife Holly would love do something as simple as being able to take a walk with Chris around the block. I know his children, Daniel (15) and Juliet (10) would love to not see daddy struggle and be able to play with them without pain and limitations. Although, always trying to remain positive, as of lately , there seem to be more bad days for Chris, than good.. more struggles, more falls, more pain.
This is the reason we sit here today asking those of you that can or wish to help, to find it in your heart and please donate to “GO FUND CHRIS!”
This upcoming February, 2022, Chris will be heading down to Mexico, one of only three locations around the world that perform a very complicated “STEM CELL TRANSPLANT” which Chris hopes will stop the disease from progressing, or even possibly help cure him. At the very least, this could allow Chris to return to a more normal or free from pain and a crippling lifestyle, so he can once again enjoy his family, friends and a life so many of us take for granted and are lucky enough to do. The surgery is upwards of $60,000 and due to the severity of the procedure will cause Chris to spend one month in seclusion, away from his family and loved ones. He truly needs all the support, donations and prayer we can offer.
Some people are lucky enough to have a friend like Chris, you know that “guys guy” that family, friends, co-workers, and yes, even strangers at times, turn to when a favor is needed… or just to get cheered up by his humor. And, anyone who knows him knows when in his presence, you’ll be laughing.. it might be at your expense but it will be funny! Chris’s kindness, and appetite for life and adventure have always been grand and he deserves better. Better than what this debilitating disease has done to him. I could go on for pages about my dear friend and if you’re reading this, and know Chris, you know what I mean. He will always be our Mush and we love him.
Thank You for taking the time to read this message and any help you can offer, is so very much appreciated.
