On Feb. 19, 2018, Chris went to the ER with severe stomach pain. 3 days before that, he had visited a doctor for a very benign procedure, however later that evening didn’t feel well. He chalked it up to the flu, since it was rampant around town. From the moment he arrived at the ER, his life took a turn that none of us could have ever imagined.
Chris didn’t have the flu. Chris was septic. The procedure he had caused a Strep A infection in his blood that traveled throughout his entire body and all of the sudden he was fighting for his life. Chris experienced multiple organ failure, was intubated (on a ventilator), on dialysis and a team of doctors did all they could to save his life. The next few weeks in the Intensive Care Unit proved to be devastating. Chris went thru endless tests with rounds of doctors trying to stabilize his condition. After being intubated for over 2 weeks, doctors chose to perform a tracheotomy so that he could breathe without a tube in his voice box and to reduce the likelihood of infection.
Chris had been through the ringer. His body had just barely survived multiple organ and acute heart failure. Then, he couldn’t move his arms or legs. Like many ICU patients who are that close to death, Chris was diagnosed with Critical Illness Neuropathy/Myopathy. This news was beyond anything we were expecting. The Neurologist said that in the 30 years he has been practicing he has never seen such a severe case. He said it may be months or years before Chris will be able to move again, from his neck down. He is not able to breathe on his own, nor able to speak. He is fed through a feeding tube to his stomach.
The doctors announced on March 20th that the best course at this time to take would be to transfer Chris to a Long Term Care Facility and out of ICU, where he has now been for the past month. Chris may require professional care for a long time, perhaps the rest of his life.
Chris and his wife own a wonderful CPA practice that they acquired after his wife’s step father passed away almost 2 years ago and they were gifted his business. This is their ONLY source of income. They have 2 little girls, ages, 1 ½ and 3 1/2. The financial burden on this family is overwhelming and they will not be able to take on all of the financial responsibilities alone.
Our hope and prayer is for Chris to recover and one day regain mobility for independent living.
Chris is well known by friends & family for his smile, charm and dedication to wife and children. His family gives heartfelt thanks for the love and kindness they have received to date.
