Chi Psi Kitchen

Fellow Lodgers,

For years, the Delta Delta kitchen has been an integral element for life at 2311 Piedmont.  The process of preparing and gathering for a meal keeps the brothers, both live-in and live-out, connected on regular basis.  Further the smells from the kitchen as food was prepared were crucial to mask some of the other odors emanating from the building. Unfortunately, as it stands, the kitchen is inoperative.  The oven and the range have died of natural causes.  There are multiple plumbing issues.  Finally, one night a year ago or so some attentive Lodgers noticed a different smell and quickly diagnosed it was a gas leak. With some quick thinking, they were able to shut off the gas to the kitchen until a proper inspection could be conducted. Days later, it was determined that in it’s current state, the gas couldn’t be turned back on, rendering the kitchen virtually obsolete.

Despite not having a kitchen the brotherhood at Delta Delta has recently been able to thrive.  Current membership stands at 46 Brothers, there are 15 pledges that will be initiated in the coming weeks and the Lodge is full of Chi Psi brothers.  See the photo above.

The brothers still gather for Monday dinner, typically after purchasing some pizza or cheap Chinese Food.  That is the only meal they share. The current actives have come to the alumni board and asked for some help on this.  They want to get the kitchen up and running, get a meal plan together and start preparing and gathering for regular meals.  They already have two kitchen stewards to try to help in this process.  All they need now is a working kitchen.

Mike Meyer (“Tiny”) '82, Alex Terry '89 and others have been meeting at the Lodge and working with professionals to figure out exactly what is needed.  A rough cut of the plan is this: pull out and replace the existing range and oven, repair the existing refrigerator, test and repair all gas-line and pluming issues, get the hood in working order, purchase a new freezer and shelving for the pantry area and repaint the kitchen.  The actives are going to help doing the muscle work, they already have pulled out the range and oven and stored them outside where the Pi Phis can enjoy looking at them.  For the rest of the work we have tentatively budgeted this at a cost of forty-five thousand ($45,000).  Our hope is to come in below this number and use any excess to get chairs and tables for the dining room.

The ultimate goal is to get the kitchen and dining room set up so the actives have the ability to gather for meals on regular basis.  This will allow them to lie to each other about their performance at the recent exchange, breakdown the current geopolitical situation, and in general just have some down time as a full brotherhood to cement those bonds that have sustained for us over the years.

Thanks for reading this and for any support you can provide.
