Fundraiser for Children at Asia's Biggest Landfill

Donation protected

Our organisation:

BGBJ is an Indonesian charity organisation located on the biggest landfill in Asia. Every day around 8000 tonnes of garbage from Jakarta arrives at the landfill in Bantar Gebang. Over 5000 families are living and working in and around this area. Most families work as 'scavengers' on top of the rubbish mountain under life threathening conditions, picking up plastic, metal and anything that can be valuable. Children from these families are often taken out of school to work or help support the family. This prevents them from getting a proper education and forces them to do the same work as their parents as they can't get a job outside of the landfill.

BGBJ tries to help the community break free of this vicious circle by giving the children education and showing them that no matter where you come from, with motivation and commitment (from both the parents and the children) they can grow a better future and escape poverty. Currently the organisation's impact is mostly limited to sunday activities where we provide between 40 and 80 children of education, food, events and daytrips. BGBJ is ambitious to expand their impact from weekly to daily and this project will be a big step in that direction.

Library/ Music Studio & Rooftop Garden

Children from around the landfill often lack access to proper educational resources. The ones who can afford it go to a school where they get low quality education in a plain and unsanitary building. Their homes don’t provide a clean and quiet place to study and the few places with access to books or computers cost money. Without a proper education the children are left with very little opportunities to get a job outside of the landfill.

- The library will function to support children in their current education, provide extra facilities and expand their opportunities in life. -

The main goal for BGBJ is to give the children at Bantar Gebang the opportunity to grow a better future so they can escape the landfill life. In order to help the children we need them to be motivated and committed to this goal as well. A new library/ music studio will be an important educational resource that will help them to learn about motivation and commitment as these are key qualities needed for achieving any goal. Providing the children with books on a variety of subjects and computers with internet access will help them explore their interests, find their passion and set goals in life.

Some of the kids at the landfill already know what they want to be when they grow up but without any hope of achieving that, they will eventually end up lowering their goals and doing the same work as their parents picking up or sorting trash. Giving these children the opportunity to read about their passions and expand their knowledge on those subjects will keep them motivated as they will be closer to achieving their dream of becoming a doctor, a teacher or a musician.

The library/ music studio will be open every day of the week. This space will provide a cool, quiet & safe environment  for the children to read, study, do homework and hang out. The building will also function as music studio so the children have the option to alternate between studying and creative activities. It also gives children with a passion for music the opportunity to learn new instruments and exploit their musical talents. All facilities we will provide such as using the computers with internet connection, printing, reading and using music instruments will be free to use for all the children from Bantar Gebang.

Finally, the rooftop garden will be used as a community project where local children and adults can help us grow vegetables. Growing vegetables takes an amount of time and effort and it teaches people about commitment and responsibility. The vegetables will be used to cook for the children on Sunday and leftovers will be given to the community.

We believe that teaching the children about these important qualities in life will increase their chance of achieving their dreams and escape the landfill and it's poverty!

Furniture and instruments

During a previous campaign "Global Jam for peace", we were able to  raise funds to purchase  the following musical instruments.

11 Ukele's
10 Melodica's
9 Guitars
1 Drumset

We also already have a supply of English books for study and musical books for the children to utilise when learning.

In addition to this Amazon has kindly donated 100 new chairs for seating of the children at the local school and here in the library/music studio, ensuring that we already have the basics for the children to start learning as soon as the building is ready.

Cooling systems including Aircon and fans will be utilised in the rooms to enable a comfortable study environment for the children to promote learning.  Currently the children's study environment is outside where temperatures can rise up to 45 Celcius.

Design

BGBJ is proposing to renovate its rooftop over its canopy area and renovate the rooftop over the computer lab and storage area to accommodate the addition of a second story to the current building. The second story will be used as a combination of a library and a music studio for the children to use in conjunction with the computer lab and will be equipped with an outdoor staircase and terrace. The renovated rooftop over the adjacent canopy area will be transformed into a rooftop garden and made accessible from the terrace.

The current canopy rooftop consists of corrugated iron and has been standing for 10 years. Although still functional, it is beginning to show signs of wear and tear. Holes in the corrugated iron allow leakages of water to the area below. In events of heavy rain, the area below the canopy still gets wet. Additionally, when winds are strong, some loose pieces of rooftop flap around creating a potential hazard. The roof above the computer lab is functional but needs to be rennovated to accommodate the addition of the library.

Design concepts have been drawn and are enclosed in this proposal. A final design will be confirmed before funding is secured. The proposed canopy roof will be made of a mixture of natural and man-made material and will include bamboo, leaves, wood, and steel.

The second floor building addition and terrace will be made out of steel and wood and will consist of 49,6 square meters.

We estimate that once funding is secured, construction and permitting will take around 4 months to complete.

Budget:

While we are still determining the cost of the project we estimate that the costs will be approximately Rp. 200,000,000. The preliminary budget is as follows:

Labor (4 local builders):                                          Rp. 45,000,000

Materials for library & Music studio:              Rp. 95,000,000

New roof & Rooftop garden:                                Rp. 60,000,000

Design:                                                                               Rp. 0

Timeline:

31/12/2019 - Designs Confirmed

15/02/2020 - Funding Secured

22/02/2020 - Materials Acquired

06/03/2020 - Construction

In line with the above estimates, BGBJ respectfully requests an amount of Rp. 200,000,000 to fund the rooftop renovations and to add the second floor and the rooftop garden.
