Children working in gold mines in Choco, Colombia

Donation protected

In the video, a girl from the community of Quiadó is guiding us to the place where her mother is doing mining. My colleague, the social worker Amparo Chala, asks her if she is attending to school, to what she answers "No, because our teacher broke her leg". However, the reason behind reflects a different story. This girl is no longer attending to school because she works next to her mother as a "bateadora", also known in english as gold panner.

In Colombia, and specifically in the area of Choco, children work in mining since a very young age. They usually start by helping their mothers with the "bateo" (panning) at the age of 8-10 years old. The low income levels may force the family to dedicate time to work in mining, rather than providing education for their children. Gold is uncertain, but mining is the only thing people in the area know best how to do. Unfortunately for children there is barely a different choice and working in mining is not only hard, but extremely dangerous.

This campaign does not promise to change the lives of these children, but it does want to give them a different Christmas away from the daily routine of their work in mining. With the help of my colleague in Chocó, Amparo Chala, we would like to raise funds to buy them toys and make hot chocolate for 50 children in the community of Quiadó (Municipality of Union Panamericana) and 50 children in the community of Ichó (municipality of Quibdó).

We have a short amount of time, but we hope to raise at least 200 euros  to get a small present that could bring them and their mothers a moment of joy.

Thank you for your donation, we will make sure to post a video of them receiving these gifts on the day we deliver them.
