600 children and 200 moms from the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin, traumatized by the ongoing violence, need your support.
Why these children?
In 2002, the Palestinian camp of Jenin - 14 000 inhabitants living on 1km2 - in northern Palestine was invaded by the Israeli army occupying Palestine since 1967. Most of the houses and infrastructure were destroyed or damaged. Several dozen people were killed, hundreds were injured, many of them children. All life has long been disrupted and continues to be today.
The creation of the association Not to Forget in 2002
These events led Palestinian moms to create the association "Not to Forget. A Women Society to reorganize the life of the camp and especially to meet the many needs of children traumatized by these extremely violent events. Among these needs, one of the most important in the long term is to help children and young people to find a psychological and social balance
The situation continues to worsen
Since 2002 and until today, the Israeli army continues and multiplies its incursions, especially at night, in the camp, in the houses, in the schools and often leaves the camp in desolation. Entire families, children and young people find themselves in terrible physical and psychological conditions; soldiers regularly arrest children and youth and imprison them without charge. More than 20 % of children are currently in a state of undernourishment. Violence becomes commonplace, post-traumatic symptoms affect almost all children. The question then arises: "What future for the children of Jenin? ".
The psycho-social support project tries to respond to this crisis
In view of the worsening of the situation, Not to Forget has developed its program with the support of the Committee for a Just Peace in the Middle East as of 2006. In 2011 the financial support of the Luxembourg Ministry of Cooperation was added. These supports have given children new life and hope through a psycho-social support program. This program was developed by the Palestinian Red Crescent with the help of Fathy Flefel, psycho-sociologist.
The annual evaluation of the project shows real progress for both children and mothers (more information on the evaluation of the program on demand).
What is the support required for?
To allow the project to continue over the next three years (2019-2021): to deepen - ensuring the results achieved - and to expand to 600 new children, 200 mothers and 200 young people each year.
Concretely are organized
• weekly psycho-social support workshops with children and young people,
• homework help workshops,
• collective activities within the camp,
• excursions and summer camps
• food aid
• Specific psychological support for particularly traumatized children.
• Word groups for moms
• In-depth psychological help to mothers in great difficulty.
Particular emphasis will be placed during these three years on the rights of women and children, the attitudes related to democracy and the reconstruction of relations with the authority, deeply upset by the situation.
How is the project funded?
The annual budget is 125 000 € to 135 000 €, depending on the year.
The Committee for a Just Peace in the Middle East must find each year from 30 000 to 40 000 €, to complete the contribution of the Ministry of Cooperation of Luxembourg bringing the balance.
Not to Forget provides the project with its many / many volunteers and the premises at its disposal.
The 10 000 € we are raising through Gofundme will contribute to pay the financial compensations that are granted to the social educators. For 2019, they amount to 39 600 € (330 € per month per educator). The 10 educators provide the activities, the workshops, the basic training for children, young people and mothers ; they also participate in training and internal meetings.
Our organisation is working since 2011 with the local NGO women’s society Not To Forget. We transfer the money from our account to their account regularly. Our team is in constant touch with the team in Jenin camp. Mostaham, the Palestinian-Belgian coordinator of the progamme in Jenin, is writing monthly reports and we compile reports twice a year and forward them to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that is the main financial contributor. We also visit the project at least once a year, and can monitor that the funds are directed to the scheduled activities to the right beneficiaries (we meet the different stake-holders, make interviews, check the files, etc.).

Pourquoi ces enfants ?
En 2002, le camp palestinien de Jenine -14 000 habitants vivant sur 1km2 -, au nord de la Palestine, était envahi par l’armée israélienne qui occupe militairement la Palestine depuis 1967. La plupart des maisons et des infrastructures ont été détruites ou endommagées. Plusieurs dizaines d’habitants ont été tués, des centaines ont été blessés, dont beaucoup d’enfants. Toute la vie en est restée longtemps bouleversée et continue de l’être aujourd’hui.

Ces événements ont amené des mamans palestiniennes à créer l’association “Not to Forget. A Women Society” en vue de réorganiser la vie du camp et surtout de répondre aux nombreux besoins des enfants traumatisés par ces événements extrêmement violents. Des familles entières, des enfants et des jeunes se retrouvent ainsi dans des conditions physiques et psychologiques effroyables ; les soldats arrêtent régulièrement des enfants et des jeunes et les emprisonnent, sans aucun chef d’accusation. Plus de 20 % des enfants sont aujourd’hui dans un état de dénutrition avéré. La violence se banalise, les symptômes post-traumatiques touchent presque tous les enfants. Se pose donc la question : « Quel avenir pour les enfants de Jénine ? ».
Le projet de soutien psycho-social tente de répondre à cette crise
Vu l’aggravation de la situation, Not to Forget a développé son programme avec le soutien du Comité pour une Paix Juste au Proche-Orient à partir de 2006. En 2011 s’est ajouté le soutien financier du ministère luxembourgeois de la Coopération. Ces soutiens ont permis de redonner vie et espoir aux enfants grâce à un programme de soutien psycho-social. Ce programme a été mis au point par le Croissant Rouge palestinien avec le concours de Fathy Flefel, psycho-sociologue.
L’évaluation annuelle du projet montre une réelle progression aussi bien chez les enfants que chez les mamans (plus d’information sur l’évaluation du programme sur demande).
À quoi va servir le soutien demandé ?
À permettre au projet de se poursuivre au cours des trois prochaines années (2019-2021) : de s’approfondir – en assurant les résultats acquis - et de s’élargir vers 600 nouveaux enfants, 200 mamans et 200 jeunes chaque année.

Nous les compilons deux fois par an et les transmettons à notre ministère des Affaires étrangères – Direction de la Coopération, lequel est le principal contributeur financier. Nous visitons également le projet au moins une fois par an et contrôlons ainsi que les fonds sont bien dirigés vers les activités planifiées à l’intention des bénéficiaires appropriés (nous rencontrons les différentes parties prenantes, organisons des entretiens, vérifions les dossiers, etc.).
