Three years ago when I left the father of my two children we made a verbal agreement regarding parenting time and child support. Since that time I have had to deal with him deciding to pay less and less whenever he chooses. He doesn’t want more than 48hrs a week with the children, but he also doesn’t want to pay to support them either. Most recently he has decided that he is only going to pay half of what he has been paying. He wants to save his money so he can move and says, “It’s fair”. This will leave the children and I with only half of our rent money each month.
To put things into exact dollar amounts, he says he’s going to pay $575 each month; the Oregon Child Support Calculator states he should be paying $1132 a month.
Our little family has been through so much. These kids have been through far more than any child should ever have to go through. Some of you know the horrors we’ve survived, for those of you who don’t, trust me when I say that these two beautiful babies deserve better. They deserve more.
As a single mom I work my butt off every day trying to provide for them the best life I possibly can. I work 40 hours a week and I always accept overtime when offered. I’m paid only once monthly and once our bills are paid we are lucky if I have $200 left to buy food and gas for the entire month. As hard as I run myself, as fortunate as I am to have the wonderful job I have, I still can’t do it all on my own without the proper amount of child support from their father. And we already live as bare minimum as it gets.
Needless to say the time has come to legally establish child support. I’ve been advised to have a cushion of money set aside to keep the bills paid during the time it will take to get everything settled. I’ve been told it’s likely he will stop paying altogether during this time. 90-120+ days is the expected wait for establishing child support.
The $3500 goal is to cover the next 3 months of rent.
Asking for help is difficult for me, but they say it takes a village. I now call on that village.
