Hello, My name is Chie Saito, and I am a Master of Fine Arts student in theater, contemporary performance at Naropa University. I am an international student from Japan which means I am not allowed to make money outside of university so I am seeking for help.

I am presenting my thesis work in the Spring of 2018 for which I am raising funds to help make this vision possible.

Since 2016 I have been interviewing Japanese Americans who have lived experience of the internment camps in America during World War II. The vision of my thesis is to present their stories in such a way that an audience will not only hear the accounts but may feel the experience in their skin and bones. I envisioned bringing together two people who lived through that time in this country in different situations. I want to bring them together without judgement or preconceived feelings and see where it takes us.

The performances will be on May 3, 4, and 5, 2018.

Who is involved......

Paul Imahara (Performance): A Japanese American who lives in Los Angeles, CA. He lived in the Tulelake Camp for 4 years from the age of 6 to 10 years old. Paul became a Buddhist monk after the age of 60 with the aspiration to help others.

     Barbara Dilley
(Performance): Born in Chicago, Illinois. Barbara started dancing in early childhood and joined Merce Cunningham's dance company in 1963. In the 1970s, she followed the invitation of Chögyam Trungpa to help develop the dance and movement program at Naropa institute in Boulder, Colorado.

Leigh Fondakowski (Mentor): An Emmy nominated co-screenwriter for the adaptation of The Laramie Project for HBO. She was the head writer of The Laramie Project and has been a member of the Tectonic Theatre Project since 1995.
Leigh Talks the Importance of Interview-Based Theater

Stephen Wangh (Advisor): A playwright, director, and teacher of acting. Author of An Acrobat of the Heart, a physical approach to acting inspired by the work of Jerzy Grotowski.
*His book has been Chie's essensial handbook to performance and she decided to study at Naropa University because she wanted to learn from Stephen. Stephen had left Naropa when Chie arrived in Bouler but she had a chance to work with him as a rehearal assistant in the production he came back as a guest artist and directed in 2015.

All funds raised will be used for......

Bringing Paul Imahara to Boulder including flight, hotel and food, and other transportation.

Budget for costume and set design, including photographer, videographer, set designer, musician, and light board operator.

Chie Saito (Director) flight to Los Angeles for meetings, rehearsals, and interviews for the development of this project which continues after this performance.

Facilitation of talk back session after the performance.

I also hope we are successful enough that part of the funds raised can make it possible to invite my mother who has never seen my work in America.

The larger vision is to create a continuing project after finishing my thesis performance in Boulder. I will be creating other performances in different locations with new people and stories. I would like to invite a community that wants to see this kind of project come to life and that could support me and work with me in various ways.

Here's few ways to donate....
1. You could simply donate through this site.
