If a child reads for 20 minutes every day, they are exposed to about 1.8 million words of text every year. That is 137 new words per minute!
Reading is an integral part of a child’s development. It is the foundation of their ability to learn and concentrate. Reading helps exercise a child’s brain, expand their vocabulary, language and literacy skills at every level. Children need access to reading material to progress through school and life. These are few examples of the importance of reading in a child's development.
Unfortunately, many children lack the resources to enable them to cultivate the habit of reading. Progress reports collected by Cheerful Hearts Foundation (CHF) on former child laborers under CHF’s education scholarship indicates that many of the children face a lot of difficulties with reading and writing. This challenge is attributable to the lack of reading material in schools or a well-resourced library facility in the communities.
Cheerful Hearts Foundation (CHF) has created a reading program to promote reading among children at the basic level in schools in the Gomoa Nyanyano community in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region of Ghana to develop their reading habit and enhance their reading performance. The program engages students in practical reading activities that will help them to read and understand. The activities also encourage children to make reading a regular habit.
To make this sustainable and fun as children play read and learn, the Cheerful Hearts Foundations is working on having a well-resourced library in the ‘Fieldhouse’ to support and encourage reading among children in the community on regular basis. The Fieldhouse serves as a skills training center as well as a sports center for all kind of sporting activities that sees a lot of children trooping in at their leisure times to play. Having a very well-resourced library in the Fieldhouse will serve as a place where the children can learn and play and will be of benefit to the over 55 schools and 15,839 pupils in the community.
To complete the library we need approximately 500 reading books of all grades, furniture to provide comfortable seating for student to enjoy reading at the Fieldhouse, 10 computers as an additional support for student to practice reading with computer programs and enhance their IT knowledge, bookshelves that will store the books and burglar proof to protect materials in the library.
500 books $1,162
100 reading desks $4,500
10 computers $5,000
Burglar proof $890
The total cost of completing the library is $12,152.
We are fundraising to complete the library and enhance the reading skills of children in the Gomoah Nyanyano Community. Any amount donated will make a change.
