CHEYLEIA GOMES

Cheyleia Gomes (aka CheyChey) is a fun-loving happy 9 year-old girl who loves slime, anything pink, chicken katsu, and of course TikTok. She is the daughter of Kaipo & Rhianna Gomes and sister to 6 siblings. Cheyleia would often complain about headaches and overtime Kaipo & Rhianna started to notice changes in her demeanor. On August 12, 2020 the headaches continued so Kaipo & Rhianna took her to the Emergency Room. The doctor’s initial test all came back normal/negative. The last test was an MRI, and within minutes the scans revealed a tumor. A parents worst nightmare just became the Gomes family reality. Their beautiful little girl was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG), a highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumor found at the base of the brain and doctors believe she only has 14 months left to live. DIPG accounts for 10% of all childhood central nervous system tumors. Approximately 300 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with DIPG each year. While DIPGs are usually diagnosed when children are between the ages of 5 and 9, they can occur at any age in childhood. These tumors occur in boys and girls equally and do not generally appear in adults.There is still no effective treatment and no chance of survival. Only 10% of children with DIPG survive for 2 years following their diagnosis, and less than 1% survive for 5 years. The median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis. Rhianna is also pregnant with their 8th child and was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a high-risk pregnancy issue that can be dangerous or even fatal to the mother or baby if not treated or properly managed.
