Chester's Spinal Deformity Treatment

Chester PJ Moon, as we have decided to call him, is a sweet young Great Pyrenees German Shephard mix born on Labor Day of this year with a spinal deformity.

Chester came from a small farm in south Georgia, and the owners originally believed a cow had stepped on him and caused what we see below.

This X-Ray was taken on November 15th, and shows, according to Chester's veterinarian, that one of the vertebrae did not form entirely and is causing a dip in his spine. She believes it's unlikely to be an injury because of the lack of physical trauma or fractures, and the callouses on both sides of his hind paws. It's likely to be passed down from his Shephard genes. Because of this deformity, Chester has trouble walking and getting up. Being the size he is now, it's certainly not as bad as it could be, but little Chester's massive paws tell us he's going to be a big boy. A deformity like this will cause lots of problems for him down the line as he grows, and when he has lots of weight to carry.

A group of volunteers made us aware of Chester's situation, and because of them, we were able to pick up little Chester from this farm because we believed we could give this sweet, gentle puppy the care and treatment that he needs, and it shines through in all of the love and support he has received so far.

Our goal is to take Chester to Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to get him examined by their doctors so they can further evaluate what his future needs are - currently, we are looking at a full spinal workup, an MRI, possible surgery, and physical therapy all depending on what the doctors say. It's ambitious, but we are determined to get Chester to where he needs to be, no matter what that means for him.
